Synopsis (short abstract) This manual provides a guide to the survey routines that should be followed during hydroacoustic fish abundance surveys in the northwest African region for a harmonized coverage. The guidelines could, however, also be useful for other regions with similar environmental characteristics and marine resources.The principles explained have mainly been adopted from the survey strategy followed during surveys with the R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN. The manual covers topics such as survey design , calibration of hydroacoustic equipment, instrument settings, echo identification, biomass estimation, statistical analysis, standard format for data storage, environmental sampling and presentation of survey results.

    The second meeting of the Planning Group for the Coordination of Acoustic surveys off Northwest Africa was held in Dakar, Senegal, from 28 to 29 October 2003. The general objective of the Planning Group is to plan the coordination of acoustic surveys in the region including intercalibration of research vessels and to act as a forum for discussion on issues important to acoustic surveys such as standardization of methods, acoustic research and training. A total of ten scientists from the Gambia, Mauritania, Morocco, Norway, Senegal and FAO participated in the meeting. Mr Abdoulaye Sarre (CRODT, Senegal) was elected chairman of the meeting for a 2-year period.The Planning Group noted that the three countries that possess their own research vessels had all conducted acoustic surveys in 2003 and that progress had been made in terms of planning and implementation of surveys as well as in data analysis and reporting. Nevertheless, there are still some issues that need to be addressed including the coordination of the national surveys to ensure complete coverage of the pelagic stocks, studies to reduce the noise level of the different research vessels, and the operation of the pelagic trawl to improve sampling of the target pelagic species. The importance of carrying studies on the Target Strength (TS) values of the main small pelagic fish species was also highlighted and a proposal for a two week training course was elaborated during the meeting.     A Workshop to plan the 1999 R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN surveys in the northern CECAF area and the standardization of acoustic surveys in the region was held in Casablanca, Morocco from 18 to 22 October 1999. This Workshop was a follow-up to the Workshop "A review of the surveys off Northwest Africa in the 1990s" held in Bergen in 1998 (FAO, 1998). The countries represented were the Gambia, Mauritania, Morocco and Senegal as well as Norway, Russia and FAO. The purpose of the Workshop was to plan the 1999 acoustic survey with the R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN off Northwest Africa in November-December 1999 and to discuss the standardization of acoustic surveys in the Northern CECAF area as well as following-up on other recommendations from the meeting in Bergen in 1998. The Workshop stressed the usefulness of the results from the DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN surveys and strongly recommended that the surveys be continued. The Workshop considered that the use of the results for stock assessment could st ill be increased at a regional level and therefore recommended to establish a Working Group on assessment of small pelagic resources in the same region as covered by the DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN surveys. The Working Group on Guidelines provided a first draft of the Guidelines for acoustic surveys in Northwest Africa. It was recommended that the Working Group should meet again before the next acoustic survey in the year 2000.
