The Aquaculture and Inland Fisheries Project, (AIFP) otherwise known as AnnexII of the Nigerian Special Programme for Food Security (NSPFS) was operational between 18 July 2003 and 30 June 2006 for 35 months. The AIFP’s objectives included compiling an inventory and data base of inland water bodies, fish farms and feed mills, providing technical assistance to private fish farmers and assisting artisanal fisherman in community-based management of inland waters. A good linkage was forged between p rivate fish hatcheries and the stocking of lakes for increased fish production. Efforts were also made towards reduction of post harvest loss of fish through improved fish smoking demonstrations. The project was successful in creating increased public awareness on aquaculture and fisheries bringing them to become national development priorities.

Presented in the following discussions are summaries of conditions of fishfarms and brackishwater sites visited and suggestions for improving the engineering of coastal fishfarms in the country, (for existing, underconstruction and proposed farms). The various problems in relation to the engineering aspects of aquaculture in the eastern and western coasts were identified and suggestions, recommendations and solutions to problems, particulary in the engineering of the fishfarms visited, are pre sented. The lack or absence of a proper plan, workable designs, material and work specifications for the farms of India has obviously resulted in waste of money, time and effort. The fishfarms visited were seen to be in need of remodelling if to make them workable and economically viable as a production farm. The brackishwater sites have big potentials for development into fishfarms if with designs to suit the varied conditions of climate, tidal amplitude, wave and tidal influence, water qua lity and soil characteristics obtaining in the five site types 1.

The paper describes a system of water management for tidal aquaculture ponds. Screens are used at multiple points, with a progressively smaller screen at each point. Advice is given on how to construct screens with different screening materials. The use of woodboards to set up an oblique flow across fine mesh screens is described. A circular flow is set up between a board and the fine mesh screen which makes the screen essentially self cleaning.
