Synopsis (short abstract) Iranian pistachios hold a significant position in global markets; however, maintaining and enhancing their competitiveness requires modernization across the supply chain. This Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP), implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), aims to strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Agriculture Jahad and the Deputy of Horticulture in improving integrated pistachio supply chain management. By promoting advanced production technologies, efficient harvesting methods, mechanized processing, and updated quality control measures for mycotoxins, pesticide residues, and other contaminants, the project seeks to enhance the productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness of the pistachio value chain at every stage.

    Iran’s total land area is 162.85 million ha of which 11.93 percent is covered by arable and permanent crops. The main commodities produced in the country are tomatoes, meat, chicken, milk, wheat, pistachios and grapes. When the first impacts of the green revolution were felt on human health and the environment, the Iranian scientific community and agencies responsible for the agriculture sector began to investigate ways to reduce the negative effects associated with applied intensive agriculture technologies. Addressing the issue of the excessive use of chemical pesticides, they appealed to the concept of Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
