Synopsis (short abstract) This document attempts to present the current state of knowledge on agroforestry parkland systems. These systems, which for many local populations are very important for food security, income generation and environmental protection, are found primarily in the semi-arid and sub-humid zones of West Africa. The document first provides a thorough description of their distribution and diversity and discusses different ways of classifying them. It also presents data on current trends in parkland devel opment and assesses determining factors. The document then provides an in-depth analysis of biophysical tree-soil-crop interactions and the factors regulating them, and describes various improved parkland management techniques. It goes on to examine the strength and limitations of institutional arrangements as well as the constraints imposed by Sahelian forest policies on the sustainable management of parklands. The production, use and marketing of parkland products is reviewed with an emphasis on their contribution to food security, local and national income as well as social values. Overall costs and benefits of the practice of parkland agroforestry are evaluated. In conclusion, the document identifies crucial research needs and promising avenues for promoting sustainable management of parkland systems.

    This publication responds to calls in regional and global forestry forums to strengthen capacity for effectively developing and implementing payment schemes for environmental services in sub-Saharan Africa. In particular, the African Forestry and Wildlife Commission, at its 18th session, called for enhancement of the institutional capacities of member countries and the sharing of knowledge on payment schemes for forest environmental services at the national and subregional levels. The publicatio n focuses on forest-based environmental services, such as carbon sequestration, watershed protection and biodiversity conservation. It comes at a time when forests are at the centre of global responses to the challenge of climate change and when payment schemes for forest environmental services are increasingly seen as a valuable means of generating revenues for local economic development from sustainable forest management. It compiles lessons applicable in sub-Saharan Africa generated by initia tives in the subregion and in other regions relevant to sub-Saharan Africa.

    The Expert Consultation on Small-Scale Fisheries Management in Sub-Saharan Africa was held in the FAO Regional Office for Africa, Accra, Ghana, from 12 to 14 December 2001. It was attended by 11 experts from nine sub-Saharan countries. Mr Thomas Maembe, Director of Fisheries, United Republic of Tanzania, was elected Chairperson of the Consultation. The Consultation made a thorough review of management approaches employed in the small-scale fisheries in the region and found that Government i nstitutional arrangements/ management was prevalent compared to traditional and co-management systems. However, most countries operate all three in various combinations and in varying circumstances. In view of the analysis of the experiences with regard to procedure, achievements, constraints and lessons learnt, co-management emerged as a viable option for the present, and should be pursued into the future. The Consultation recommended, inter alia, that FAO assist in formulating guidelines for the development and introduction of co-management. The guidelines should include appropriate indicators through which to measure progress of co-management at national and regional level.
