    The second session of the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission was attended by delegates from Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, the Republic of Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, the United Republic of Tanzania and Yemen. Representatives of The World Conservation Union (IUCN), the Swedish Board of Fisheries, the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Project (SWIOFP), the Regional Seas Program of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Oceanographic Research Institut e (ORI), New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) also attended the session as observers. The Commission noted the work undertaken since the first session, considered the report of the Scientific Committee, agreed on a set of recommendations, approved the establishment of Working Group on Fisheries Data and Statistics, and agreed to link with the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Project (SWIOFP) through a Committee to be established within the Commission. The Commission will hold a regi onal conference on “Sustainable fisheries development and its contribution to the Millennium Development Goals” within two years; the key topics of the Conference were decided. The Commission agreed to renew its efforts to engage on-going national and regional monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) activities and assist with a regional directory of MCS personnel. It elected a Bureau composed of Seychelles, Madagascar and Mozambique to steer the Commission intersessionally and at the third se ssion which will take place in Seychelles in 2007.

    The third session of the South West Indian Ocean Commission was attended by delegates from France, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, the United Republic of Tanzania and Yemen. Representatives of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), the Indian Ocean Commission Monitoring Control and Surveillance Project (IOC-MCS), the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Project (SWIOFP), the Reg ional Programme for the Sustainable Management of the Coastal Zones of the Indian Ocean (ReCoMap) and the World Bank also attended the session as observers. The Commission noted the work undertaken since the second session, considered the report of the Scientific Committee, and agreed that the second Working Party on Fisheries Data and Statistics should address the harmonization of fishery frame surveys.     The fourth session of the Scientific Committee of the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission was attended by delegates from Comoros, France, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa and the United Republic of Tanzania. Representatives of FIRMS/FISHCODE, the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), the EAF¿Nansen project, the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Project (SWIOFP) and the United Kingdom also attended the session as observers. The Scienti fic Committee elected a new Chairperson, examined the status of fisheries resources in its area of competence; considered a report of the Working Group on demersal and small pelagic fishes; discussed research and management actions in Comores (sea cucumber), France (smallscale fisheries), Mozambique (deep-water lobster), Maldives (sharks), Mauritius (sea cucumber) Seychelles (sharks), South Africa (line fishery) and Tanzania (prawns); reviewed the progress towards an ecosystem approach to fisheries; was presented information on the availability and accessibility of data on tuna catches in the EEZs of member countries and high seas; discussed a recent fishery assessment from Mauritius; discussed integration of databases providing regional fisheries information; and made recommendations for the consideration of the fifth session of the Commission. The next session of the Scientific Committee will take place in South Africa or alternatively in Tanzania in 2011 at least t wo months before the sixth session of the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission.
