Synopsis (short abstract) Whereas the legal regime of marine fisheries has been the subject of considerable attention as it has evolved since 1945, the legal regime of aquaculture has tended to be neglected in comparison. However, aquaculture is increasingly being seen as an important method of improving food production, and there are impressive statistics on the increased volume of production in recent years. For these, and no doubt other reasons, it is timely to examine the legal regime governing this activity. The purpose of the present study is to examine the legal regime of aquaculture, focusing in particular on the key legal issues governing this activity. In addition to some general matters discussed in the introduction, these are: the general place of aquaculture in the legal system, access to and use of water and land, environmental aspects, including fish disease, import of live fish and the introduction of non-indigenous species. It would have been impossible to have considered all or even a ma jority of the laws concerning aquaculture throughout the world. The approach adopted, therefore, was to consider at least the laws of particular countries reflecting the differences between common law and civil law systems, developed and developing societies, and centrally planned and capitalist societies.

    Resolution No.33 adopted at the 87th General Session of the World Assembly of National Delegates of the OIE recommended that ‘A global initiative for the control of ASF be launched using the GF-TADs mechanism to develop, improve and harmonise national, regional and global partnership and coordination to address ASF at the source, enhance prevention and preparedness, minimise adverse impacts on animal health and welfare, international trade, and social wellbeing’. The FAO-OIE GF-TADs Initiative for the Global Control of ASF have been drafted by the OIE and FAO technical teams. It aims to tackle the strategic challenges to effectively address the mandate given to the OIE and FAO at the last OIE General Session by defining the objectives and providing the structure for specific outcomes to be achieved for the global control of the disease.

The report shows how increasing women’s empowerment and gender equality in agrifood systems enhances women’s well-being and the well-being of their households, creating opportunities for economic growth, greater incomes, productivity and resilience.The report comes more than a decade after the publication of the State of food and agriculture (SOFA) 2010–11: Women in agriculture – Closing the gender gap for development. SOFA 2010–11 documented the tremendous costs of gender inequality not only for women but also for agriculture and the broader economy and society, making the business case for closing existing gender gaps in accessing agricultural assets, inputs and services. Moving beyond agriculture, The status of women in agrifood systems reflects not only on how gender equality and women’s empowerment are central to the transition towards sustainable and resilient agrifood systems but also on how the transformation of agrifood systems can contribute to gender equality and women’s empowerment. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the available evidence on gender equality and women’s empowerment in agrifood systems that has been produced over the last decade. The report also provides policymakers and development actors with an extensive review of what has worked, highlighting the promise of moving from closing specific gender gaps towards the adoption of gender-transformative approaches that explicitly address the formal and informal structural constraints to equality.
