Synopsis (short abstract) Beginning in 2016, the Anglophone Crisis has led to the internal displacement of over 160 000 people in Cameroon. In addition, hundreds of thousands of people have sort refuge in neighbouring Nigeria, and many others have fled to nearby forests. Complicating matters further, many farms and houses have been burned down. This has ultimately resulted in negative outcomes for the regional economy. The situation continues to deteriorate in terms of household livelihood options, and the prevailing insecurity makes it difficult for farmers to cultivate crops and take care of livestock. The flow-on effects include a substantial reduction in food security. The emergence of this crisis led United Nations (UN) agencies to undertake a rapid assessment of the situation in March 2018. Following the assessment, a flash appeal for Cameroon was prepared through the UN system. The project was therefore prepared within the framework of the flash appeal for Cameroon. The aim of the project was to improve the food and nutrition security of internally displaced people in Cameroon. Initially, the project sought to reach 500 families, or approximately 3 500 direct beneficiaries. Four outputs were envisioned for the project. These included: supporting broiler production (Output 1); supporting egg production (Output 2); supporting production through market gardening and nutrition education (Output 3); and strengthening the capacity of national institutions in data collection and processing, and developing early warning systems for conflict-affected areas (Output 4).

    Protracted displacement in Darfur has disrupted traditional agricultural based livelihood activities and eroded community capacity to withstand shocks Despite relative peace and stability in Darfur in recent years, around 1 6 million displaced people continue to live in camps and rural gatherings, according to data released by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Sudan in 2018 In addition, according to the 2018 Humanitarian Response Plan ( more than two million people in Darfur are food insecure The capacity of resident communities to host displaced people in the conflict affected areas, whether sedentary rural farmers or nomadic pastoralists, has been undermined In addition, low crop productivity associated with the lack of certified seeds and variable rainfall has forced many farmers to engage in shifting cultivation, encroaching on grazing routes and sites Vulnerable people among internally displaced persons ( returnees and hosting communities are increasingly vulnerable because of their reduced access to agricultural inputs and water, as well as a chronic shortage of basic services The conflict has also impacted pastoral traditional mobility and access to grazing and water resources for livestock, giving rise to resource based competition and tension between farmers and pastoralists.

    To reduce risks and vulnerability of households and communities, FAO is implementing the emergency livelihood and nutrition support to the vulnerable population in the crisis affected communities in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon. This project aims at improving the food security of beneficiaries through the production of eggs/nutrition-sensitive poultry farming, organic oyster mushrooms and vegetable gardens for domestic consumption as well as the sale on the market.
