No results found. This report gives an account of penaeid shrimp culture development work including postlarval production, nursery rearing and pond culture. The postlarval culture method was established for Penaeus monodon and P. merguiensis using different types of culture vessels. The total number of postlarvae produced in 1975 was 580 300 and production has increased to over 4 million in 1977; this figure will be rapidly increased in 1978 from induced gonad maturation and spawning. The highest P. monodon postl arvae per brood in a 10 m3 tank was achieved by producing 375 000 with 73 percent survival, and 320 000 with 52 percent survival for P. merguiensis. Mass-culture systems of phytoplankton and rotifers were established for larval food organisms. The particulated soybean curd and rotifers were used for the larval diet to substitute for Artemia nauplii. Artemia will still be needed for a better survival rate. Various types of nursery methods were experimented on formulated diet and on natural food in ponds; the optimal nursery stocking densities were determined. A series of pond culture results indicated that interim fish extermination by using 7 ppm derris root extract was effective. The annual shrimp production in pond projected from preliminary results indicated that 600 kg per ha per year is possible, utilizing natural productivity with the fertilization but no feeding. This phase of the work needs to be repeated. Based on the experiments, recommendations are outlined for f urther work to increase production. -
Book (series)Report of the FAO/MARD Technical Workshop on Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) or Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Syndrome (AHPNS) of Cultured Shrimp (under TCP/VIE/3304) 2013

No results found. With the current understanding that EMS/AHPNS has a bacterial aetiology, a strain of Vibrio parahaemolyticus, the Workshop recommended that a proper name be now given to EMS/AHPNS, i.e. Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND). The Workshop drew a number of recommendations on specific and generic actions and measures for reducing the risk of AHPND, directed to wider shrimp aquaculture stakeholders (public and private sectors) pertinent to important areas such as: AHPND diagnosis; AHPND notification/reporting; international trade of live shrimp, shrimp products (frozen, cooked), and live feed for shrimp; advice to countries affected and not affected by AHPND; measures at farm and hatchery facilities; advice to pharmaceutical and feed companies and shrimp producers; actions on knowledge and capacity development; AHPND outbreak investigation/emergency response; and specific AHPND-targetted research on various themes (i.e. epidemiology, diagnostics, pathogenicity and virulence, pu blic health, mixed infections, non-antimicrobial control measures, environment, polyculture technologies). -

Shrimp Culture Development Project
1991Also available in:
No results found. The first phase of the consultant's assignment for the Agricultural sector project formulation mission TCP/IRA/0051 was carried out during the period 22 March-14 April 1990. The terms of reference as set out in the report on the first consultancy are as follows : to review and assess experience to date in Iran, and in particular at the Government pilot project, in the field of marine shrimp production including research, egg collection, breeding, disease control and feeding; to visit the sit es of existing marine shrimp culture operations in Iran, make recommendations on technology suitable for Iranian conditions, pond preparation, source of feed, disease and quality control, and where necessary equipment for which costs and specifications should be provided. in the course of his investigations, to provide training to his Iranian counterpart and develop proposals for an on-site training programme at the Government pilot shrimp culture station. to prepare a report on the findings as well as a project preparation framework and draft project document for UNDP funding. The latter should be discussed with the Government and cleared by UNDP prior to the consultant's departure from Teheran.
