Synopsis (short abstract) In February 2005, a West African Bushmeat Conference took place in Accra, Ghana. Participants from twelve West African countries were present as well as representatives of UEMOA, OCSFA, Zoological Society of London (ZSL), WWF head office in Switzerland, WCS and USAID. Five topics were discussed: Food Security, Trade, Socio-cultural Aspects, Education and Awareness and Threatened Species. The presence of many African countries as well as NGOs and important regional and sub-regional organizatio ns, gave an importance to the topic of bushmeat which shall lead to a stronger interest and political will, to effectively move into action.

In this issue of Unasylva, E.O.A. Asibey, Ecologist at the World Bank and G.S. Child, FAO Senior Officer for Wildlife and Protected Area Management, present a critical review of the status of wildlife management in sub-Saharan Africa, and suggest approaches to ensure sustainable utilization of the resource. A closely related article by three wildlife experts working in Zambia details the success of a pilot programme designed to reduce illegal hunting in and around protected areas through the act ive involvement of local people.
