    The SWM Programme is the first international initiative to tackle the wild meat challenge by addressing both wildlife conservation and food security. It is an initiative from the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), funded by the European Union with co-funding from the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM) and the French Development Agency (AFD). The SWM Programme mobilizes an international group of partner organizations with strong expertise and experience in wildlife conservation, food security and policy development. It is implemented through a consortium partnership, which includes the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD). The SWM Programme is developing innovative, collaborative and scalable new models, which conserve wildlife and protect ecosystems, while at the same time improving the living conditions and food security of the people who depend on these resources. Field projects are being implemented in 15 African, Caribbean and Pacific countries. In each country, the SWM Programme partners are working closely with communities, national authorities and other local institutions. This tenth SWM newsletter is informing our donors and partners about the main highlights and results achieved in the SWM Programme’s countries. This latest issue features an interesting interview with Robert Nasi, Director General, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR).

    This quarterly Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme newsletter is informing our donors and partners about the main highlights and results on the field across fifteen countries. Interview with donors, partners, local staff, videos, facts and figures, events are also be presented. The SWM Programme is the first international initiative to tackle the wild meat challenge by addressing both wildlife conservation and food security. The SWM Programme is an initiative of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS), which is funded by the European Union (EU) and co-financed by the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM) and the French Development Agency (AFD).     Access to sustainable energy is essential for development, poverty reduction and food security. Rwanda, like many other developing countries, is working on identifying sustainable energy solutions to ensure access to energy. Bioenergy is one possible form of renewable energy that countries are looking at to supply part of their energy portfolio. Rwanda currently relies on traditional biomass for energy supply, and shifting away from traditional biomass use would lower its dependency on traditional biomass and improve access to modern sustainable energy forms. Sustainable bioenergy interlinks closely with the agriculture sector, therefore it is necessary to find specific options that minimize negative impacts on the environment and food security. This accomplishes the dual purpose of energy security and food security. This report assesses the use of agriculture residues for the production of bioenergy in Rwanda. The methodology used for the assessment is the Bioenergy and Food Security (BEFS) approach of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The report provides a detailed assessment of the potential of crop, livestock and woody biomass availability for the production of off-grid electricity solutions and cooking fuels. Through the assessment, a number of specific bioenergy pathways are identified as suitable for bioenergy production. These options should be carried forward for piloting in the country and ground truthing.

    Biomass waste management strategy for Uganda 2021

    This Biomass Waste Strategy provides evidence of the large amount of biomass waste (by-product) from small informal and large formal sawmilling facilities in Uganda; as well as actions to reduce the large volume of waste. Uganda has witnessed an increase in investment in plantation forestry since 2004. As the plantations mature and processing commences, the amount of waste will also increase. The report therefore provides expert advice and technical assistance to support sawmill managers and supervisors to acquire skills and knowledge in downstream processing and utilization to reduce wood waste. It focusses on the development of a waste management strategy appropriate for Uganda, with a specific focus on pine sawmilling. If waste could be minimised in the sawmilling context, more of the high value primary product would be produced. Modern sawmills are able to achieve in excess of 50 percent product output. However, Sawmilling in Uganda is characterised by many small, mobile, informal sawmills, which currently produce more sawn products than the formal sawmills. There is a large amount of waste produced each year, with both formal and informal sawmills operating at very low recovery rates. One needs to consider the extent of the industrial forests in Uganda in order to make predictions regarding the wood that is being processed or will be processed, as well as the waste that will be generated. Therefore, a biomass strategy is important.
