Book (series)Report of the Regional Training Workshop on Climate Change Adaptation Planning
University of Cape Town, South Africa, 18–19 March 2019
2022Also available in:
No results found. The purpose of the workshop was to support governance actors and community leads to learn and train local communities in moving from vulnerability assessment to adaptation planning and implementation in fisheries and aquaculture. Twenty-six participants (women and men) attended from Angola, Namibia and South Africa. The workshop was spread across two days. Day 1 provided an overview of some of the key ideas and tools for adaptation planning. Participants were reminded of the need to combine information from bottom-up and top-down assessment processes. A review of the adaptation toolbox developed by FAO helped guide partners in planning their adaptation; the importance of considering the timing of risk as well as that of climate funding, were reiterated. The focus of day 2 was on community-level adaptation planning. The main climate risks/stressors identified during the rapid vulnerability assessment (RVA) process were revisited, and the suite of adaptation actions identified were presented. The practical steps to follow when taking forward the adaptation “ideas” and options identified in the RVA process were outlined. This is not a linear process but a slow, ongoing and iterative process, and each adaptation option has its own pathway. Some adaptation actions may be easily implemented (e.g. a training course on community organization) while others may require several steps and information (e.g. research, engagement with different government departments) before being implemented. The outcome of the workshop was used to inform the planning of the project Supporting Member Countries Implement Climate Change Adaptation Measures in Fisheries and Aquaculture (GCP/GLO/959/NOR). -
Book (series)Report of the workshop on optimizing food and nutrition security and livelihood benefits of small pelagic species production in sub-Saharan Africa, Accra, Ghana, 5–7 December 2023 2024
Also available in:
Based on earlier work by FAO in collaboration with other organizations and institutions, the workshop on “Optimizing food and nutrition security and livelihood benefits of small pelagic species production in sub-Saharan Africa” aimed to develop a better understanding of supply chains for small pelagic species in sub-Saharan/West Africa. In doing so, it focused on how related fishery resources could best contribute to food and nutrition security, and to the livelihoods of small-scale and fisheries-dependent communities. The workshop was an opportunity to review good practices and lessons learned concerning the alignment between the fish-based products industry and food and nutrition security considerations. It also identified policy considerations, future research and other actions to support effective management of small pelagic resources. The workshop brought together 50 representatives from local fishing communities, governments, private sector actors, research institutions, and relevant professional and interest organizations. A number of conclusions were drawn and recommendations made on how to safeguard the contribution of small pelagics to food and nutrition while having a responsible fishmeal and fish oil industry in the West African region. -
Book (series)Shared fish stock management in the Benguela Current region
Workshop report, Cape Town, 8–9 November 2023
2025Also available in:
No results found. The EAF-Nansen Programme in collaboration with the Benguela Current Convention (BCC) hosted a workshop to share learning among fisheries managers and scientists about the management of fishing activity that affects fish stocks shared by Angola, Namibia and South Africa in the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem. This report presents lessons and key challenges from the participants’ assessment of the history of shared stock management in the region and the network of fisheries actors influencing this management. It then synthesizes visions of shared stock management in 2035 proposed by the participants. Based on the workshop outcomes, the EAF-Nansen Programme is working with the BCC and national agencies to identify and advance priority actions towards the visions in the region.
