No results found.In this report, we apply a suite of new data and empirical methods to demonstrate how livestock can make a significant contribution to the livelihoods of the poor. This potential is far from being realized, however, and there is much wider scope for the promotion of livestock, especially among poor rural communities. Using new techniques, we show how information distilled from a variety of sources can be combined in an empirical approach termed ‘integrated poverty assessment of livestock promoti on’ (IPALP). This technique elucidates the role of livestock in poverty alleviation and economic growth generally, strengthening the basis of evidence for policies that can better support pro-poor development. Using a very detailed new national Social Accounting Matrix and a dynamic Calibrated General Equilibrium Model, policy experiments are conducted to assess the impact of an economy-wide policy of trade liberalization, with and without concomitant livestock promotion. Our results reveal the complex indirect linkages between globalization and rural poverty alleviation. Generally speaking, the poor may not benefit directly from traditional export oriented development strategies, but by marketing food to rising income urbanites, they can participate in national growth more effectively. -

No results found.Although the poor constitute a majority in developing countries, their circumstances vary in significant ways between and within their economies. To improve their livelihoods, a better understanding of this heterogeneity is essential. This report examines poverty from the perspective of livestock dependence, an essential characteristic of rural and peri-urban households in developing countries. We find that livestock dependent populations are more likely to be poor, but the degree of their pover ty depends on complex local circumstances, including the extent of formal sector participation, property rights, and access to capital. Our insights suggest that more determined efforts to promote smallholder livestock production can be a potent catalyst for poverty alleviation, but that policies aimed at promotion of smallholder livestock keepers need to be carefully targeted and that although they can bring a large proportion of the poor over the poverty threshold, there are circumstances in w hich they will not reach the poorest population. -

No results found.This paper examines the case of smallholder poultry production and adjustments arising from the risk of HPAI infection in Viet Nam. We consider how farmers can mix three risk reduction strategies: product diversification, investment in product quality (biosafety), and development of off-farm income opportunities, to mitigate the adverse effects of significant animal disease risk. With our findings we aim to provide a basis for complementary policies that promote smallholder viability while achie ving risk reduction, an approach that increases both individual and economywide welfare.
