Synopsis (short abstract) This Impact Report lists the achievements made under the "Promoting self-reliant livelihoods through employment and micro-entrepreneurship" project funded by the Government of Japan. The project supported the establishment of micro-scale agri-businesses under the umbrella of two women’s cooperatives. 76 percent of project participants gained new sources of income in the agri-food sector after participating in the project. One of the cooperatives successfully used e-commerce platforms to market their products during the challenging conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    FAO Türkiye, in line with its overall mandate, supports the Turkish Government in close collaboration and synergy with line ministries, UN agencies, international organizations, civil society organizations, academia, and the private sector to strengthen three priority areas: food and nutrition security and safety; sustainable forest and natural resources management, including fisheries; and institutional capacity enhancement of the public and private sectors. Gender is one of the crosscutting themes that is mandatorily mainstreamed within all projects and regular work under the above-mentioned priority areas. FAO Türkiye’s actions for the implementation of gender commitments are guided by the FAO Policy on Gender Equality 2020–2030 which recognizes that persistent inequalities between women and men constitute a major obstacle to agriculture and rural development; and that eliminating these disparities is essential to building sustainable and inclusive food systems and resilient and peaceful societies. The implementation of equality goals and targets are the shared responsibility of line ministries, other government offices and civil society organizations. The National Action Plan on Women’s Empowerment 2018–2023 aims promote women’s participation in economic and social life; ensure women’s equal access to rights and opportunities; and mainstream the principle of equality between women and men into all the main state plans and programmes. In response to the challenges, FAO Türkiye cooperates with the Turkish Government to deliver a range of gender mainstreamed and women-focused actions. This compilation of practices from the field aims to raise awareness among practitioners by sharing experiences and lessons learned to develop future actions.

    Promoting self-reliant livelihoods of Syrian refugee and Turkish host communities through entrepreneurship in food and agriculture in Turkey The project funded by the Government of Japan supported both Syrian refugee and local Turkish communities to create new sources of income in food and agricultral sector. The project found three agri-food products which have strong and stable consumer demand in local markets and provided the project participants with trainings and equipment to establish small-scale production cooperatives. The cooperatives found local buyers of their products and continued to sell their products after the completion of the project in March 2020. As of June 2020, 48 percent of them successfully gained new income sources.

    Long-term job frustration underlines Africa’s most pressing issues such as distress migration and peace and security, making it the number one policy preoccupation for policy makers in the continent. With limited resources and unlimited problems, policy makers are forced to prioritize interventions that will achieve the biggest impact on tackling youth unemployment. In this regard, agripreneurship can turn job seekers into job creators and help young agripreneurs not to fall back into unemployment again. However, not all business training programmes are effective and not all trainees benefit. Evidence has been mixed concerning the impact of traditional business training in enabling youth to develop viable businesses, including in the agriculture sector. This policy brief presents evidence on the impact of Personal Initiative Agripreneurship training titled “Agripreneurship 101” on achieving success for youth-led agribusinesses.
