Synopsis (short abstract) The fishery research vessel “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” belongs to the Norwegian Agency for International Development (NORAD), and was designed and built for scientific and exploratory investigations of fishery resources of developing countries. The Institute of Marine Research, Bergen, is responsible for the scientific programme and the operation of the vessel. By an agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Oman and UNDP/FAO and NORAD the vessel was scheduled to work in Omani waters in February and March 1983. The work was funded by UNDP/FAO and NORAD. The first month of the work was set aside for pilot studies on catch technology on mesopelagic resources in the Gulf of Oman. This work has been covered in a separate preliminary cruise report. The last three weeks of the survey was assigned to cover the shelf from Muscat to the southern border of Oman. The vessel had earlier carried out five acoustic surveys in Omani waters under a FAO programme for the Nor th Arabian Sea in 1975-76. The last part of the present survey was thus designed as a follow-up of the previous work. The main objectives were: Acoustic survey of the small pelagic fish resources off Oman, and of the demersal fish resources in the 20-200 m bottom zone with intensive trawl sampling. Charting of the main hydrological regime off Oman in four transects. Experimental fishing with traps on bottom unsuitable for trawling. Various acoustic experiments to improve ac oustic methodology.

    As in August and December 1982, the shelf and area with waters shallower than about 200 m depth outside Kenya was surveyed in the period 2-8 May 1983. Three of the four hydrographical sections worked in August and December were repeated. In these sections parametres as temperature, salinity and oxygen contents were observed in the upper 500 m of the water column. Temperature and salinity in the surface were observed at several stations.

    In an agreement between NORAD and FAO/UNDP the R/V “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” has been scheduled to work in the region from Morocco to Sierra Leone within the CECAF programme from August to December 1986. A planning meeting was held on 7-9 April at Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where it was agreed that the R/V “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” should work in Morocco for abt. 14 days in September and in November, in cooperation with the new R/V “Charif El Idrissi”. The first survey was set to the period 22 September to 5 October. Due to technical problems the “Charif El Idrissi” could not participate in the September survey, and it was decided that “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” should do the acoustical work by itself. In November the two vessels plan to do a joint survey. In accordance with the survey plan a main acoustical coverage of the shelf from Agadir to Cape Juby was first to be made to localize the aggregations of small pelagic fish, mainly sardines. Then effort was to be concentrated on these aggregatio ns with detailed studies on biomass estimation, target strength and fish behaviour.

    The research vessel “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” is scheduled to undertake several fishery resources surveys in the North Arabian Sea during 1983-84. These investigations are part of the UNDP/FAO Global Programme GLO/82/001. The first cruise in Pakistani waters under this programme was carried out in September 1983. The survey programme included acoustical survey for the purpose of mapping fish distribution and abundance estimation, trawling for identification of echo recordings, biological sampli ng and hydrographic observations. “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” carried out similar surveys in Pakistani waters during the North Arabian Sea Programme in 1975-76 and during the Joint NORAD/Pakistan Project from January to June 1971. The results from these investigations have been presented in cruise reports as well as in summary reports. The present survey was carried out during the period 19 January to 2 February 1984.
