Synopsis (short abstract) The Afghanistan Soil Information System (AfSIS) project, funded by FAO core budget, has completed soil surveys, analyzed soil samples, and mapped soil in nine provinces of Afghanistan. This Afghanistan Soil Atlas is the culmination of this work. This Atlas details soil properties, soil types, key nutrients in soil, and threats to agriculture from degraded soil in nine provinces, as well as selected national soil maps. This Atlas will help policymakers and land users better plan crop plantations, target irrigation designs, and create better climate change mitigation, and natural resource management strategies. The project data and methodology was comprised of field soil profile studies, laboratory soil analyses, and geo-data information. Soil profile site selection considered natural factors influencing soil formation, total land area, and available financial resources. The locations of soil profile sites were preloaded into GPS-enabled mobile or tablet application in order to guide the surveyors to the exact point in the field. During fieldwork, the selected soil profiles including 2-3 soil surface samples were studied according to the FAO Soil Profile description standards. Soil laboratory analysis methods were mostly those, which are favorable for arid and semi-arid region. The new national soil maps created from this data are on 1:200,000 scale, while provincial-level maps are on 1:50,000 scale.

    The pressing need for increased agricultural production in the years ahead can only be met by more efficient use of our land and water resources including more widespread and better irrigation in those regions where rainfall is inadequate. Production gains will be shortlived unless the attendant hazards of salinization, water logging and lowered fertility are kept in check by effective planning and management based on a thorough understanding of the soil conditions. Soil survey and land classifi cation are generally accepted essential preliminaries to investment in irrigation development. This publication aims to describe the special requirements of soil survey for irrigation development, and assumes that the reader is familiar with basic soil science and soil survey techniques.

    Agriculture is crucial for the national economy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Adoption of new strategies for agriculture monitoring, rural land use planning, and management are urgently required to reduce hunger and poverty and to assure sustainable food and feed production for future generations. The availability of reliable information on natural resources and agriculture for its monitoring and analysis is indispensable to the development and implementation of such strategies. For this purpose the project “Strengthening Afghanistan Institutions’ Capacity for the Assessment of Agriculture Production and Scenario Development” (GCP/AFG/087/EC), funded by the European Union (EU), is implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Within the context of this project, FAO and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) are developing a National Agro-Ecological Zoning activity (NAEZ) in Afghanistan. This Atlas is the first of two books and provides the collected information and maps of the country based on the agro-climatic Indicators.
