    FAO’s Policy Optimization Tool (PolOpT) empowers governments to reallocate their public budgets on food and agriculture, repurposing limited resources into powerful drivers of change to achieve more agricultural transformation, and better food security and nutrition in an era of tight fiscal constraints. PolOpT uses advanced modelling techniques to generate tailored country spending scenarios, showing governments and policymakers insights into optimizing spending across key areas like extension services, fertilizer subsidies, irrigation, mechanization, electrification, rural roads, R&D, and seed subsidies to maximize socioeconomic benefits. Tested in countries like Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Uganda, PolOpT has shown remarkable potential: lifting hundreds of thousands of rural people out of poverty, creating thousands of rural jobs, making healthy diets affordable for millions, and boosting agrifood output by optimizing agrifood budgets. The tool doesn’t stop at socioeconomic transformation. PolOpT can now optimize agrifood policies to align with mitigation and land restoration and protection efforts, in alignment with global environmental commitments like the Paris Agreement, the Global Biodiversity Framework, National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans, Nationally Determined Contributions, National Adaption Plans, and efforts to combat desertification, among others. With PolOpT, governments can better navigate fiscal pressures on the public purse while achieving transformative impacts through smarter, more strategic spending on food and agriculture.

    This Marketing Report presents the results of FAO’s Multi-Partner Programme Support Mechanism (FMM) achievements from 2014 to 2017. It demonstrates clearly that the FMM contributed to the Organization’s successful delivery of tangible results in countries and brought about other important benefits in terms of innovation, catalytic effects and stimulation of cross-sectoral work. The Report further highlights how FAO, through the FMM, has successfully leveraged its capabilities, both at a global and country level. The flexible funding mechanism of the FMM has proven to be a catalytic force in addressing critical funding gaps, forging new partnerships, testing and scaling up innovative areas of work and designing bigger and more impactful initiatives. The results presented here not only highlight the benefits of FAO’s global normative work and knowledge products, but also the relevance of the FMM to empowering a large number of smallholders, especially rural women and youth, enhancing resilience to climate shocks, generating farm and off-farm incomes and meeting livelihood needs.

    The purpose of this publication is to present technical and business information designed to address issues facing small and medium-size juice processors along with insights into the theory and practice of juice and juice beverage processing and utilization. Both major and minor fruits will be covered with emphasis upon limited-resource producers for local markets. Unique, high-quality juice products can secure a niche position. With attention to quality, value, safety, health, and an innovative approach to these parameters, a manufacturer can move beyond the niche category and become a major player. This is a more difficult but feasible task.There are some general principles that should be understood by anyone contemplating entering the juice processing business. Many aspects of production, postharvest handling, food safety, quality, unit operations, processing, and packaging procedures, as well as regulatory control, are common to practically all juice products. Then there are a number of product-specific details, dependent upon the morphology, composition, and character of the individual fruit. This publication will provide adequate details so interested parties can either improve existing operations or develop new processing establishments. Potential capabilities include adding value to local agricultural products, providing employment, augmenting the quality, safety, economy, and diversity of the local food supply.

    In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation.To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world.In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.
