No results found.As part of the implementation of a regional fisheries strategy for the Eastern and Southern Africa and Indian Ocean region (ESA-IO region), SmartFish is currently supporting initiatives designed to improve fisheries governance in Seychelles. SmartFish’s involvement consists in providing technical support to promote the establishment of a Fisheries Economic Intelligence Unit (FEIU) within the Seychelles Fisheries Authority (SFA). This report describes the mission of the consultant sent by SmartFi sh between the 5th and 11th of May 2015 to foster the FEIU initiative and the subsequent tool that was developed to “kick start” the intelligence unit. -

No results found.Seychelles is a middle income country, geographically constituted by an archipelago of 155 islands, the main ones being La Digue Mahe Praslin and Silhouette Forest or vegetation cover accounts for approximately 80 percent of the country’s land area Forest ecosystems play a crucial role for food security, human and environmental well beings, for example in maintaining biodiversity and for the tourism sector, a significant source of employment for the archipelago Therefore, the sustainable management of forests constitutes an integral part of the sustainable development of the Seychelles In recent years, forest degradation has persisted due to growing urbanization, agriculture practices, climate change, and advancement of invasive species and loss of biodiversity Against this background, in 2019 the government asked that FAO support the forest section of the Ministry of Agriculture Climate Change and Environment ( in the preparation of Seychelles’ national forest policy and legislation and the inclusive participation of stakeholders in national forestry programmes This project contributed to the preparation of key documents, a new forest policy and a legislative forest act, to ensure local management of forest resources and to fully integrate the forest sector in the national development agenda The results of the project further enabled the national forestry institutions to strengthen and upscale their support to the forestry and natural resources management stakeholders. -

No results found.The Conference on the Strategy for Marine Fisheries Management and Development in Viet Nam, (Hanoi, 26–27 April 2005) was organized by the Ministry of Fisheries of Viet Nam (MOFI) in close collaboration with the Research Institute of Marine Fisheries, the DANIDA Fisheries Sector Programme Support (FSPS) and the FAO FishCode Programme. It represented the culmination of a process that started in 2003 with the Conference on Responsible Fisheries in Viet Nam and that included a number of local level consultations as well as a senior expert meeting in 2004. The 2005 Strategy Conference was attended by a wide range of sectoral stakeholders, representing local and commercial fisheries interests, national and provincial government bodies, bilateral development assistance agencies and international organizations. Observations and recommendations received from the Conference have provided a basis for MOFI to finalize the Strategy and to submit it for Prime Ministerial approval in early 2006.
