Blue transformation is a vision that aims to satisfy the world’s growing nutritional needs by providing the legal, policy and technical framework to sustain growth while conserving aquatic ecosystems. Technology and science are key to this process: artificial intelligence, the use of drones, and blockchain technologies are already determining a dramatic change in aquatic food value chains. But how can they be harnessed to achieve a transformation that is long-lasting and sustainable? In the context of the FAO Science and Innovation Forum, experts, resource partners and investors in the aquatic food sector will gather on the 20 of October 2022 at 11am CEST to discuss ideas, practices and solutions for leveraging science, technologies and innovation to make a genuine contribution to healthy nutrition, human well-being and poverty alleviation.

The platform acts as an information and knowledge hub that effectively links relevant stakeholders to consolidate, as much as possible, the available knowledge, information, innovations related to date palm value chain and production problems such as red palm weevil, pollination, soil and irrigation management, etc. The digital innovation platform was launched in the opening ceremony of the 7th International Date Pam Conference on March 14, 2022 in Abu Dhabi. The platform was designed to facilitate a full cycle model from idea to innovation and vice versa and this includes the backend server and software for storing data, processing information, providing artificial intelligence support and providing web services to communicate with other parts of the platform. The frontend applications provide interface to various stakeholders and display reports and statistics via dashboard. The platform is characterized by active dashboard for discussion forum, projects, news, activities, reports and statistics and performed as a knowledge hub that effectively utilize any new opportunities in an economic or social process. The operationalized research and innovation platform demonstrates a model of collaboration among relevant stakeholders and partners on issues, research, development, innovations, regulations and funding. The platform also identifies a set of research priorities, gaps and practices, promising technologies and technical innovations related to the date palm value chain. Therefore, this generated knowledge with better integration among stakeholders, enhanced learning processes with multiple benefits, created business opportunities by deploying new technologies, markets, learning and networking, and leveraged change in resource mobilization. The platform can also actively enhance the capacity of producers, stakeholders and young professionals in the region.
