Synopsis (short abstract) The El Niño phenomenon is a natural climatic event characterized by the anomalous warming of waters of the intertropical Pacific Ocean, causing changes in climate patterns around the world. Ecuador, located in the South Pacific coastal zone, has historically been affected by the impacts associated with this event, causing severe floods, landslides and river overflows. The Government of Germany contributed USD 542 088 to FAO's project "Anticipatory actions to protect agricultural livelihoods against the impact of the El Niño phenomenon in Ecuador". The project was implemented from 6 November 2023 to 30 March 2024. It enabled 2 288 households to improve their diets, food availability and crop diversification thanks to family vegetable gardens and backyard poultry production, as well as access to quality water, thanks to inputs distributed. Overall, the project contributed to the reduction of households’ negative coping mechanisms in response to the impact of threats associated with the El Niño phenomenon, thus safeguarding their livelihoods and food security.

The Government of the United States of America contributed USD 150 250 000 million to the FAO project, "Providing emergency life-saving food and livelihood support to drought-affected communities in Somalia", which was implemented from 4 May 2022 to 31 March 2024. The project aimed to contribute to improving food security for the most drought-affected populations in rural Somalia. The project successfully reached 232 222 households (of whom 127 291 were headed by women) through eight interventions, namely: Emergency cash and livelihood support; Cash for work; Transitional Cash and Livelihood Programme; Somalia Water and Land Information Management; Desert locust control and surveillance operations; Food Security Cluster; Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit; and Monitoring of hydrometeorological hazards.

Improving flood and drought risk management in Somalia – SWALIM

The Government of the United States of America contributed USD 600 000 to the FAO project, "IImproving flood and drought risk management in Somalia – SWALIM", which as implemented from 1 January 2022 to 30 June 2023. The project aimed to contribute to strengthened community resilience by providing early warning information to improve flood and drought risk reduction, preparedness and mitigation. During the project implementation period, FAO’s Somalia Water and Land Information Management (SWALIM) continued to produce data and information products for flood and drought early warning, which were disseminated to partners for timely lifesaving interventions in Somalia. These included, for instance, water trucking which took place for most of 2022 following a prolonged drought across the country, as well as community evacuation to safe grounds during the recent (May 2023) flooding in Beletweyne. Overall, the project supported affected communities, government institutions and humanitarian partners.

The Republic of Korea funded FAO's project OSRO/CVI/054/ROK entitled “Safeguarding food security and livelihoods of the most vulnerable populations in Cabo Verde” for USD 100 000. The project was implemented from 19 May 2023 to 31 December 2023. The project's objective was to safeguard the food security and livelihoods of the most vulnerable people on the islands of Santo Antão and Santiago. FAO distributed 615 food baskets to 615 food-insecure households, 87 percent of which were headed by women. To achieve this, 51 households, including 38 small-scale producers and 13 operators of agricultural warehouses, provided fresh produce to increase food basket nutritional value and boost local supply networks. Households were able to cover their food needs for two months, enabling them to consume three meals a day.
