Book (series)Post-harvest fish loss assessment in small-scale fisheries: A guide for the extension officer 2011
Also available in:
No results found.Post-harvest fish losses are a major concern and occur in most fish distribution chains throughout the world. Not only do losses constitute lost income to fishers, processors and traders but they also contribute to food insecurity ¿ a loss of fish means less fish available for the consumer. This manual is the result of field testing and validation activities by FAO of three key post-harvest fish loss assessment methodologies developed over the past two decades. Meant as a working tool for extension officers, it describes these methods and provides guidance on when and how they can be used in the process of planning an intervention to reduce post-harvest losses or monitoring and the effectiveness of a loss reduction intervention. This document also provides the information on data communication and the design of loss reduction intervention to give policy-planners and decision-makers a better understanding of issues facing fishing communities. -
Book (series)Strengthening the Performance of Post-Harvest Systems and Regional Trade in Small-Scale Fisheries: Case Study of Post-Harvest Loss Reduction in the Volta Basin Riparian Countries 2015
Also available in:
This document contains the report of the situational analysis of post-harvest systems in the Volta Basin riparian countries, and presents proposals for interventions aimed to strengthen their efficiency, competitiveness and sustainability. This report summarizes the main activities implemented under the NEPAD–FAO Fish Programme (Support to the Implementation of the Strategy for Fisheries and Aquaculture in Africa-NFFP), focusing particularly on how its Output B4 “Mechanisms established for impro ving the performance of the fisheries and aquaculture post-harvest chain and regional trade” has been achieved. This first phase of the programme was carried out in the Volta Basin, which served as a pilot beneficiary area, to inform similar interventions in other shared waterbodies. -
Book (series)Post-harvest losses in small-scale fisheries. Case studies in five sub-Saharan African countries 2010
Also available in:
No results found.Field work recently carried out in five sub-Saharan Africa (Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Tanzania and Uganda) indicates that post-harvest fish losses in small-scale fisheries occur at all stages in the fish supply chain from capture to consumer. Huge physical and quality losses were found to occur in some supply chains assessed in all the countries, with quality losses reported to account for more than 70 percent of total losses. This technical paper, as support to the framework of the regional post-harv est loss assessment (PHLA) programme in small-scale fisheries in Africa aimed at improving the utilization, safety and quality of fishery products, presents the findings, lessons learned and key achievements of the field studies. The paper underlines the need for governments and development agencies to ensure that changes in post-harvest fisheries-related policy and practices take stock of the loss assessment tools, information generated and experience of the programme and recommends that fish l oss assessments should be incorporated into national data collection systems and used to regularly inform policy.
