Synopsis (short abstract) At the request and with the support of the Japanese Governament, FAO has compiled experiences of livestock keeping fom different parts of the world, categorized by production systems, to make it easier for interested people to select ideas for their own conditions. This document presents a sample of such technologies intended for livestock keeing in urban and peri-urban areas. It describes the livestock production system in traditional sectors and identifies constraints. Suggestions for improvin g production in the livestock secor are given and a literature list is included for further reference.

This document presents a sample of technologies for livestock keeping in rural mixed crop-livestock farming systems, with emphasis on describing the livestock production systems in the traditional sector and identifying constraints. S uggestions for improving production in the livestock sector are given throughout the publication and a literature list is included for further reference.

    Small-scale forest-based processing enterprises 1987

    Small-scale forest-based processing enterprises comprise an important, but neglected, part of the forestry and forest industries sector. They process a large part of the raw materials from the forest and supply some of the main markets for forest products, in particular in the rural areas of developing countries. Our concern in the work reported on in this publication has been to determine the main features, prospects and problems of such small-scale enterprises and what support could enhance their developmental contribution, and therefore the developmental impact of the forest sector. Many small enterprises are currently unstable, and offer little security or prospect of self-reliance for those engaged in them. These problems need to be tackled by promoting viable enterprises run by rural people through effective participatory organizations which can increase peoples' control over their own economic destiny. External supp ort to increase production and efficiency needs to be compatible with those valuable elements of local culture which still have a role to play in the modern context.

    The Protocol of 8-9 July 1946 relative to the dissolution of the International Institute of Agriculture, transferred the functions and assets of the said Institute to FAO. Of these assets, the Library is unquestionably the most outstanding and is a lasting record of the Institute's work and its achievement in the field of agriculture. This catalogue will undoubtedly contribute towards a better knowledge of this international Library. This volume in its present form, represents the systematic card-index, by subject of the Brussels Decimal Classification, in French and English, and it's supplemented by the general alphabetical index of authors.
