Synopsis (short abstract) Digital capabilities can help to meet future demand for safe and nutritious food, better manage natural resources and contribute to high-quality growth in productivity and in the economy. They are already the driving force behind the profound transformation of our agrifood systems and the emergence of a new vision of agriculture. 2022 has been another exceptional year of Digital Transformation in Action for FAO, further accelerated by the strong momentum achieved and with strong organizational support. The aim of this report is to provide a comprehensive overview of the key achievements related to FAO’s Digital for Impact throughout the year and to introduce the Organization's next stages in the digital journey as we look forward to next year, the year of excellence and more.

    Digital technologies for multidimensional youth engagement in agrifood systems transformation 2024

    Youth engagement is pivotal to the transformation of our agrifood systems. Simultaneously, digital technologies have contributed to the development of our agrifood systems and are an increasingly important part of young persons’ lives. Digital technologies can therefore play a role in youth engagement toward the transformation of agrifood systems. This report explores this question through a multidimensional approach, offering insights into how youth can (1) utilize digital technologies, (2) develop these technologies, (3) engage in activities and projects through digital tools and (4) participate in decision-making processes through the use of digital technologies, ultimately encouraging their active involvement in the transformation of agrifood systems. The Young Scientists Group (YSG) conducted a comprehensive literature review which highlights various relevant case studies, together with a survey capturing the perspectives and experiences of youth. The results show that, for agrifood systems transformation initiatives, digital technologies provide youth with benefits such as being able to conduct tasks more efficiently, reachwider audiences and form collaborations. However, there are challenges related to digital technology use including accessibility to these tools and the need for training and education in using them – both among youth and the collaborators they interact with. Additionally, although digital technologies can increase opportunities for engaging in decision-making, they do not necessarily ensure these. Based on the findings, we recommend policymakers and practitioners: (1) increase equitable access to digital technologies, (2) build capacities for digital skills development and training, (3) enhance youth engagement and inclusivity in decision-making processes which use digital technologies, and (4) engage youth in agrifood systems transformation initiatives involving digital technologies.

Para a FAO (2020), a digitalização, junto com o uso mais intensivo de análise de dados e novos modelos de governança, é um acelerador da necessária transformação inclusiva e sustentável dos sistemas agroalimentares.Esta publicação traz vivências do projeto +Algodão de distintos contextos, todos desafiadores, que mostram a emergências de novas ferramentas, metodologias e técnicas que se amparam na utilização mais intensa das novidades tecnológicas para contribuir com as transformações que acelerem a transição a sistemas agroalimentares mais eficientes, inclusivos, sustentáveis e resilientes na região da América Latina e Caribe. Composto por uma série de artigos, o documento apresenta as bases metodológicas pedagógicas para uma assistência técnica e extensão rural (ATER) digital participativa para o projeto +Algodão; traz os relatos das vivências do projeto no ambiente digital de comunicação rural como, por exemplo, o caso do Ecuador e da Colômbia; propõe reflexões sobre os mecanismos para promover a inovação para uma ATER digital a partir das lições aprendidas com o projeto +Algodão e; traz sugestões para uma ATER Digital participativa para a agricultura familiar algodoeira na América Latina. Este documento, uma contribuição do projeto +Algodão, executado pela FAO e a Agência Brasileira de Cooperação (ABC), no âmbito do Programa de Cooperação Internacional Brasil-FAO, dirige-se a todos os interessados no tema da assistência técnica e extensão rural, como profissionais de campo, pesquisadores e estudantes, bem como aos interessados no tema da digitalização ao serviço do meio rural.
