    Seed security interventions in Sudan have focused on improving availability and access through seed aid and seed multiplication. Over the years, determination of the need for seed aid and rehabilitation has largely been based, implicitly or explicitly, on the following studies: post-harvest assessments conducted by the State Ministries of Agriculture in close collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO); the Crop and Food Supply Assessment Missions; and ot her needs assessments, which have limited scope in examining seed security or the dynamics of the seed system. The comprehensive Seed System Security Assessment (SSSA) was undertaken to review the functioning of the existing seed systems (both formal and informal) in the country, with particular focus on the Darfur region. The assessment looked at whether seeds of adequate and preferred quality are available and whether farmers are able to access them. The approach is also expected to promote st rategic thinking about the relief, rehabilitation and development vision needed for future interventions. The comprehensive SSSA adopted a two-way approach: a commissioning of background synthesis, and primary data collection from the various stakeholders at field level. Background synthesis included: a) the formal plant breeding structures and processes; b) the formal seed production structures and processes; and c) current decentralized seed multiplication and distribution initiatives in Darf ur. The fieldwork covered 12 localities and 19 administrative units within Darfur. The method encompassed individual interviews with 725 farming households and 99 grain/seed traders; 12 community interviews and focus group discussions with women’s groups; key informant interviews with nine agro-input dealers and two agroprocessors. This is one of the most, if not the only, comprehensive agricultural and seed security assessments carried out in Sudan, with focus on Darfur region.

    Institutional assessment of the Child Grants Programme and Sustainable Poverty Reduction through Income, Nutrition, and Access to Government Services pilot project in Lesotho 2021

    This report presents analysis and findings from an institutional assessment conducted during March - September 2019 of the Lesotho Child Grants Programme (CGP), a national social protection programme supporting poor households with children 0-18 years, and the Sustainable Poverty Reduction through Income, Nutrition and Access to Government services (SPRINGS) pilot project. The main objective of this study is to understand the institutional architecture and processes of the two programmes and identify those that facilitated or hindered coordination between the social protection and productive dimensions of development interventions seeking to address rural poverty, hunger and food insecurity. The study is part of a larger project - a partnership between FAO, IFAD and the Universidad de los Andes (UNIANDES) and its Centro de Estudios en Desarrollo Económico (CEDE) - that seeks to identify factors that lead to better articulation between social protection interventions and rural productive inclusion strategies. Growing evidence has shown that complementarity between these interventions and greater coherence between social protection and rural development policies can lead to synergies by strategically addressing constraints faced by poor rural households.

    The global nature and growing complexity of the food chain means that risks posed by unsafe foods have the potential to quickly evolve from a local problem to an international incident at an increasingly rapid pace. Ensuring food safety is therefore an important component to consider in the broader context of achieving public health security around the world. While international trade of foods brings many benefits to consumers and contributes significantly to economic development, new challenges are constantly presented to food safety authorities around the world. Experience in the recent past demonstrates that with the increased volume of foods traded globally, comes an increased risk of the spread of foodborne pathogens and contaminants across national borders. This necessitates more efficient sharing of food safety information among national food safety authorities from different countries. The need to build closer links among food safety authorities internationally is well recogniz ed by FAO and WHO. Since 2004, the International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN) has provided an important platform for the rapid exchange of information in the case of food safety crises and for sharing data on both recurrent and emerging food safety issues. It is therefore imperative that we continue to work towards strengthening INFOSAN through active participation and exchange of information during international food safety emergencies.

    In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation.To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world.In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.

    The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018.
