The RECOFI–FIRMS Workshop on Resources and Fisheries Inventories was held in Cairo, Egypt, from 12 to 14 July 2011. The goal of this Workshop was to formalize an inventory of marine resources/stocks and fisheries for the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) area (at both the national and regional levels) for its eventual publication through the Fishery Resources Monitoring System (FIRMS [http://firms.fao.org/]). This inventory will be used as the backbone for regular reporting of status an d trends of stocks and fisheries under the RECOFI mandate, using the Web-based framework and approaches established by FIRMS. Ten representatives from six RECOFI Members (Bahrain, Iran [Islamic Republic of], Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia) and a resource person from Iraq participated in the Workshop. The Workshop was successful in developing a skeleton for a regional marine resources and fisheries inventory. The skeleton of the regional fisheries inventory was elaborated based on the “thr ee-dimensional diagram” approach, which allows the many facets of fisheries and their relationships to be visually represented and positioned. Fishery units were defined as fishing activities, and consistently with the RECOFI minimum data requirements. The skeleton of the regional marine resources inventory was initiated building from the 17 RECOFI priority species/groups, and will require further expert inputs from research institutes of the region. The Workshop dedicated a substantial amount o f time to training on the inventory guidelines in order to develop capacity to extend the agreed inventory skeleton with the necessary data input. The participants appraised the potential benefits of the inventory approach in support of a regional review of management measures at the national level, which will eventually support fisheries management in the RECOFI area.

Report of the CECAF-FIRMS Workshop on resources and fisheries inventories, Accra, Ghana, 7–9 December 2009 / L’Atelier copace-firms sur l’inventaire des ressources et des pêcheries. Accra, Ghana, 7-9 décembre 2009 2015

The CECAF–FIRMS workshop on resources and fisheries inventories was held in Accra, Ghana, from 7 to 9 December 2009. Its goals were to validate the inventory of fisheries and marine resources (requested from participants before the meeting) and to deliver training and start a capacity-building process on the FIRMS workflow. Approaching the CECAF member countries directly implied the need to establish a protocol for disseminating national information through the FIRMS partnership. Representatives from 15 member countries (Angola, Benin, Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, the Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Spain and Togo) and the Fishery Officer from the Regional Office for Africa participated in the workshop. The workshop was successful in advancing the validation of the work done for some of the countries, training some representatives for future delivery of the work, and establishing a network for future collaboration for the re maining ones. A protocol was drafted for the delivery of national information on fisheries through the FIRMS partnership and under the CECAF umbrella. The workshop recommended that the reporting on the state of marine resources at the regional level be maintained under full CECAF ownership. The possibility of national contributions on marine resources is a process that should take place under the aegis of the Scientific Sub-Committee.
