Synopsis (short abstract) FAO is currently assisting Mongolia in the implementation of a recently adopted animal health law, the promulgation of a pastureland management law and the development and protection of seed varieties. Assistance is also focused on building capacity for post entry quarantine management systems and improving livestock health through effective control, containment and prevention of foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks. Successful Early Warning Early Action projects have been implemented to protect the livelihoods of vulnerable households at high risk of ‘‘dzud’’ in drought affected areas, while emergency response and assistance has also been provided. Conservation and sustainable forest management for adaptation and mitigation of climate change is another key feature of cooperation. Other projects address disaster resilience; mainstreaming agrobiodiversity; value chain development, in collaboration with the European Union; crop diversification, integrated livestock-based livelihoods support; and enhanced food and nutrition security.

    The Country Programming Framework (CPF) for Mongolia 2012-2016 is the joint framework for strategic cooperation between the Government of Mongolia (GoM) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Mongolia. Channelled primarily through the Ministry of Industry and Agriculture (MoIA), and the Ministry of Nature, Environment and Green Development (MoNEGD), the CPF sets forth priority areas and activities for FAO’s assistance in support of the attainment of the GoM’s na tional development policy objectives in the fields of agriculture, fisheries, forestry, and natural resources.

    The past decade has witnessed a dynamic and rapid growth in information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the Asia-Pacific region, bringing enormous benefits to society at large. The challenge, however, is to get relevant information and technologies to the millions of poor living in rural areas. It is here where information and communication technologies can play a useful role in bridging the rural digital divide and empowering rural communities. The goal of this expert meeting was to a dvance knowledge about the use of ICT for agricultural development and rural poverty reduction in Asia and the Pacific by bringing together a cross-section of leading thinkers from organizations and countries active in ICT for rural development. The meeting provided a unique opportunity to exchange the latest information on development trends and provide a means of moving forward from an accumulated body of case studies, through the development of a programme framework, to the validation of mode ls of ICT for agriculture and rural development with the aim of extending the application of successful innovations and innovative practices more widely. These proceedings give an account of the presentations and discussions of the meeting as well as of the recommendations.

    Unlocking the potential of agriculture innovation for family farmers - Thematic catalogue for smallholder farmers to promote innovation 2018

    TECA is an FAO online platform for the exchange and sharing of agricultural technologies and practices for smallholder farmers and producers. The platform facilitates the transformation process in rural areas by making relevant and innovative technologies available to farmers in the field. In doing so, TECA further enhances the access to knowledge of smallholder producers in rural areas increasing their capacity to innovate and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This catalogue promotes a set of successful innovations for farmers on the occasion of the FAO International Symposium on Agricultural Innovation for Family Farmers: Unlocking the potential of agricultural innovation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, which will be celebrated in FAO Headquarters on 2123 November 2018. The technologies presented are concrete actions that have solved specific development challenges and promote sustainable and inclusive rural transformations. The technologies and practices are designed following the FAOTECA platform standards and have been tested and refined in the field. Each practice supports smallholder farmers and those providing advisory services to agricultural producers, to identify specific needs, select the correct practices and to implement technologies adequately. Developed with the help of FAO in cooperation with the FAO Departments of Agriculture and Consumer Protection, the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture and other key partners, the GIZ, ICRAF, IFOAM and Swisscontact, this catalogue aims at illustrating how sharing knowledge may unlock innovation throughout the farming process.
