Synopsis (short abstract) The tendency of representing information in a form that could be better elaborated by computers (the so called “machine readable formatâ€Â) (Berners-Lee 1998) initiated years ago, expanded to many domains, among which Agriculture. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, The Kasetsart University and the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur are pioneers in the representation of information and knowledge related to this domain using modern techniques such as ontology languages . This paper analyzes a couple of projects developed by these organizations, aiming to make use of a concept-oriented approach while describing agricultural topics. It is organized in two chapters each referred to each project, describing in particular the innovative aspects, the benefits, and the technology used.

The Action Groups (AGs) of the Global Alliance for Climate Smart Agriculture (GACSA) are groups with a specific and defined purpose. They can consist of members of the Alliance and other interested stakeholders. There are a number of processes to facilitate the creation of the Alliance. Action groups have been created to support the identification of the objectives, key priority areas of work and early action of the Alliance. They will also be encouraged to engage in regional and thematic progra mmes. The structure of the Alliance will be sufficiently flexible to enable participants to organize additional working groups, actions and programmes objectives. An AG shall support the implementation of the Programme of work (PoW) of the Alliance. Its tasks will be defined by the thematic priorities adopted by the Strategic Committee (SC).

The Knowledge Action Group (KAG) of the Global Alliance for Climate Smart Agriculture (GACSA) is one of the three action groups supported by the Alliance. The functions of the KAG are: Increasing and promoting knowledge, research and development into technologies, practices, and policy approaches for climate-smart agriculture; practices and technology sharing and cooperation; improving communication and information sharing among participants; and outreach, extension, and technical assistance.
