These guidelines are intended to provide guidance on pesticide risk reduction through reduced exposure by effective personal protection with special attention to the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). First, they provide technical information on personal protection and on the selection and use of PPE. Second, in line with the FAO/WHO International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management, they address policy issues and recommend measures to improve personal protection and specifically the use and availability of adequate quality and affordable PPE. They are primarily aimed at government authorities in charge of pesticide management and risk reduction, but are also considered useful to public and private sectors such as pesticide industry, non-governmental organisations (NGO) and other relevant entities. More specifically, these guidelines are targeted at stakeholders in low and middle income countries (LMICs) where it is acknowledged that there is limited legislation, compliance and enforcement, and PPE availability. These Guidelines were developed by the FAO/WHO Joint Meeting on Pesticide Management (JMPM) to provide guidance on provisions in the Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management that are related to personal protection of pesticide users. They are meant to enhance current national legislation and regulations on personal protection and personal protective equipment (PPE) or where there is none, to provide guidance. They reflect the FAO/WHO joint approach on pesticide management, thus addressing personal protection of both agricultural and public health operators/applicators, the latter being engaged in using insecticides for vector control. -

No results found.The revised International Code of Conduct on the Distribution and Use of Pesticides [1] (further referred to as the Code of Conduct) represents an updated, globally-accepted standard of conduct relating to the distribution and use of pesticides. Adopted in 2002, the revisions to the Code of Conduct have strengthened its guidance to reduce the adverse effects of pesticides on health and the environment and to support sustainable agricultural practices. Among other changes, the revised Code of Conduct contains important new provisions on monitoring and observance. Under Article 12, all stakeholders are invited to monitor and report on implementation of the Code of Conduct. Other provisions call upon governments and industry to collect and report on various types of information relating to pesticides. -

No results found.The 15th FAO/WHO Joint Meeting on Pesticide Management (JMPM), hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), was held on 15−18 November 2022 at the FAO headquarters in Rome. It was a hybrid meeting in which participants joined either physically or virtually. The meeting agenda included the following items: summary of developments and actions taken after the previous (14th) JMPM (14−15 October 2021); review of actions and recommendations from the 14th meeting; review of new guidance documents under development; revision of existing guidelines or guidance; planning development of new guidance documents and review of existing guidelines and related issues; emerging and priority issues in pesticide management, including gaps, challenges and future directions of FAO and the World Health Organization (WHO); revision of the International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management (“the Code of Conduct”); and any other issues. The recommendations of the JMPM are presented in section 13 of this report.
