    FAO’s stand-by partnerships continue to provide very valuable support to FAO in preparing and responding quickly and effectively to emergencies worldwide. In 2014, FAO responded to a number of Level 3 emergencies, such as the Philippines, South Sudan and Central African Republic, as well as other complex emergencies like Syria and the Ebola crisis in West Africa. SBPs provided support to all of these emergencies through the secondment of qualified staff in a very short time frame.

    The Progressive Management Pathway for Terrestrial Animal Biosecurity (PMP-TAB) is a collaborative, stepwise approach to assessing and managing biological risks, to strengthen biosecurity in terrestrial animal production and associated value chains. Strengthening biosecurity will minimise health threats, including disease and antimicrobial resistance, improve production and enhance livelihoods through socioeconomic benefits. In Tanzania, the focus is on pig value chain actors, initially producers, to adopt minimum biosecurity practices at the farm level. This brief presents a snapshot of biosecurity in the Tanzania pig sector and a quick assessment of the capacity of public and private animal health services suppliers to interact and cooperate with livestock farmers and facilitate their adoption of good biosecurity practices and compliance with animal health legislation to ensure prevention and timely detection of animal disease and improve health outcomes. Existing laws, regulations and guidelines on biosecurity can make a difference only to the extent they reach and are applied by livestock farmers.

    After decades of progress, hunger - both acute and chronic - is on the rise again. In 2017, a massive humanitarian effort helped to contain famine in South Sudan and avert famine in northeastern Nigeria, Somalia and Yemen. Despite this, the number of people on the brink of severe hunger continues to rise. Recognizing that humanitarian assistance alone cannot sufficiently address the growing number of people on the verge of catastrophe, FAO's humanitarian interventions are embedded in resilience building efforts that seek to tackle the root causes of vulnerabilities while meeting the immediate needs of affected communities. In 2017, DFID released a new Humanitarian Reform Policy, outlining how DFID plans to "build a more secure and prosperous world" through its humanitarian work. This FAO-DFID partnership document has been developed in response to this in order to guide and strengthen the partnership between FAO and the United Kingdom's Department for International Development to address acute hunger and build the resilience of agriculture-based livelihoods in the face of crisis. It is envisaged that this document will be updated regularly based on the outcomes of the annual FAO-DFID strategic dialogue.
