Synopsis (short abstract) Fiji experiences prolonged dry spells quite often, usually for three to four months duration, when the north-western parts of the main islands receive little or no rain which adversely impact agriculture. The overall objective of the FAO Pro-Resilient Fiji project is to structurally and sustainably reduce food insecurity and nutrition deterioration from climate change-induced disasters by tackling the root and underlying causes of vulnerability. The project foresees to improve climate risk identification, disaster management capacities and ensure the adoption of climate-smart and nutritionsensitive agricultural techniques. CSA is defined by FAO as agriculture that sustainably increases productivity, enhances resilience through adaptation; reduces GHGs through mitigation where possible, and enhances achievement of national food security and development goals.

    To help address the impact of drought on rural communities in Fiji, the European Union is providing funding to FAO to support the country in its efforts to build resilience. The ongoing project aims to structurally and sustainably reduce food insecurity and nutrition deterioration from climate change-induced disasters by tackling the root and underlying causes of vulnerability.

    This report documents the evaluation findings of the project “Strengthening community resilience to climate change in Blantyre, Zomba, Neno and Phalombe districts" - GCP/MLW/067/EC. The project created awareness to the effects of climate change, empowering community members with knowledge and skills on how to apply gender-responsive climate–sensitive practices for increased agricultural production. The communities adopted conservation and safeguarding biodiversity actions to address negative effects caused by floods, heavy winds and prolonged droughts. Some of the key transformational strategies introduced by the project towards anticipating and responding to the effects of climate hazards and shocks include managing and conserving soil, land, water, agro –forestry, and improving child care and overall food and nutrition security. A climate-sensitive and enriched farmer field school curriculum to guide training and sensitization of communities, a pool of trained facilitators, and village savings loan and livestock pass–on schemes are some of the elements to support absorption and adsorption capacity and sustain the benefits.
