Habrá que hacer mucho más para alcanzar los nuevos Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible sobre la erradicación de la pobreza y el hambre para el año 2030. La mayor parte de las poblaciones en situación de extrema pobreza vive en zonas rurales de países en desarrollo y depende de la agricultura para su subsistencia. Son tan pobres y están tan malnutridos que sus familias viven en un círculo de pobreza que se transmite de generación en generación. Muchos países en desarrollo están adoptando una nueva estrategia exitosa para romper el ciclo de la pobreza rural: combinar la protección social y el desarrollo agrícola. Las medidas de protección social, como las prestaciones monetarias para las viuda s y los huérfanos y el empleo garantizado para las personas pobres en el marco de los programas de obras públicas, pueden evitar a las personas vulnerables las peores carencias. Pueden permitir a los hogares la mejora o la diversificación de sus dietas. También pueden ayudarles a ahorrar e invertir en sus propias fincas o a emprender nuevas actividades. Los programas de desarrollo agrícola que respaldan las explotaciones familiares en pequeña escala en cuanto al acceso al mercado y la gestión de los riesgos pueden crear oportunidades de empleo y lograr que estas familias sean más autónomas y tengan una mayor resiliencia. La protección social y el desarrollo agrícola, combinados, pueden romper el ciclo de la pobreza rural.

2015The 35th World Food Day 2015 will also mark the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Evidence shows that reliable and regular social protection schemes can help poor communities to overcome financial constraints and manage risks that usually discourage them from pursuing higher returns. When implemented on a large scale, social protection systems can also contribute to an overall reduction of the poverty gap, empowering families and c ommunities.

Urbanization, agrifood systems transformation and healthy diets across the rural–urban continuum
2023This report provides an update on global progress towards the targets of ending hunger (SDG Target 2.1) and all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2) and estimates on the number of people who are unable to afford a healthy diet. Since its 2017 edition, this report has repeatedly highlighted that the intensification and interaction of conflict, climate extremes and economic slowdowns and downturns, combined with highly unaffordable nutritious foods and growing inequality, are pushing us off track to meet the SDG 2 targets. However, other important megatrends must also be factored into the analysis to fully understand the challenges and opportunities for meeting the SDG 2 targets. One such megatrend, and the focus of this year’s report, is urbanization. New evidence shows that food purchases in some countries are no longer high only among urban households but also among rural households. Consumption of highly processed foods is also increasing in peri-urban and rural areas of some countries. These changes are affecting people’s food security and nutrition in ways that differ depending on where they live across the rural–urban continuum. This timely and relevant theme is aligned with the United Nations General Assembly-endorsed New Urban Agenda, and the report provides recommendations on the policies, investments and actions needed to address the challenges of agrifood systems transformation under urbanization and to enable opportunities for ensuring access to affordable healthy diets for everyone. -

No results found.This report illustrates the food loss assessment studies undertaken along the maize, sunflower and beans supply chains in Uganda in 2015-16 and 2016-17. They aimed to identify the critical loss points in the selected supply chains, the key stages at which food losses occur, why they occur, the extent and impact of food losses and the economic, social and environmental implications of the food losses. Furthermore, these studies also evaluated the feasibility of potential interventions to reduce food losses and waste.
