This paper attempts to summarize the present knowledge of the mackerel resources in the Matacca Straits which are believed to be shared by Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. It contains a summary report and individual country papers. The material was put together following a technical working group meeting of scientists from the three countries. The meeting was held 12-16 December 1983 at the Fisheries Research Institute, Penang, Malaysia. The Director of the Institute, Mr Mohd. Shaari bin Sam Abdul Latiff, opened the meeting and welcomed the participants, whose names are listed in Appendix 5 of the paper. This paper, and the working group meeting on which it is based, are an activity of the project ‘Marine Fishery Resources Management in the Bay of Bengal,’ RAS/81/051, which is funded by the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), and executed by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) under its Bay of Bengal Programme. Dr. K. Sivasubramaniarn , Senior Fishery Biologist of the project, acted as convenor of the meeting. The project has a duration of four years; it commenced in January1983. Its immediate objective is to improve the practice of fishery resources assessment among participating countries and to stimulate and assist in joint assessment and management activities between countries shnring fish stocks.

This report was developed under the Korean-funded “Sustainable Fish Value Chains for Small Island Developing States” project. The project aims to contribute to economic growth, job creation, and food and nutrition security. This publication summarizes a much more detailed report focusing on the semi-industrial value chains of mackerel scad and tuna-like species in Cabo Verde. It reveals that the artisanal and semi-industrial fleets represent 97 percent of total catches. The semi-industrial fleet is concentrated mainly on Santiago, São Vicente, and São Nicolau islands, with the associated value chains generating almost 9110 direct jobs. Most landings of the target species are processed into canned products, which in turn make up most exports especially to the European Union. Theremainder, notably on other islands, supply the local market. The business environment is favourable, with ongoing improvements. The sustainability analysis contained in this publication assesses the economic performance, environmental impact, social aspects, and resilience to climate change. The report identifies strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats and formulates a 10-year upgrading strategy to achieve environmental sustainability, and socioeconomic development through improved financing and investment opportunities, and enhanced economic performance of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.

Report of Investigations to Improve the Kattumarams of India East Coast - BOBP/REP/17 1984

This report gives an account of the various efforts made by the small-scale fisheries project of the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP) to improve the economic performance of fishing kattumarams within the constraints set by social and economic considerations outlined in the text. A wide spectrum of possibilities has been investigated and some of them have been tried out in physical trials. Many of the ideas put forward during the course of the work were however discarded as nonviable after consul tations with experts in different disciplines. During the work the best available experts have been engaged and consulted. They include, besides BOBP staff, counterparts and fishermen, Messrs P. Gurtner and J. Fyson of the FAO Fishery Industries Division; Mr. G. Eddie, fishery engineering consultant, UK; Mr. J. McKillop, sail manufacturer, UK; Mr. G. Gowing, surf-crossing expert, Australia; and Mr. O. Gulbrandsen, naval architect, Norway. But the responsibility for opinions, errors or misjudge ments in this report rests entirely with the BOBP. Parallel with the attempts to improve the kattumarams, extensive work was undertaken to develop motorized beachlanding craft. It is referred to in this report but the full account of these activities is given in other BOBP reports and working papers.
