ArticleChallenges and Opportunities in Genetic Improvement of Local Livestock Breeds 2015
Also available in:
No results found.Sufficient genetic variation in livestock populations is necessary both for adaptation to future changes in climate and consumer demand, and for continual genetic improvement of economically important traits. Unfortunately, the current trend is for reduced genetic variation, both within and across breeds. The latter occurs primarily through the loss of small, local breeds. Inferior production is a key driver for loss of small breeds, as they are replaced by high-output international transboundar y breeds. Selection to improve productivity of small local breeds is therefore critical for their long term survival. The objective of this paper is to review the technology options available for the genetic improvement of small local breeds and discuss their feasibility. Most technologies have been developed for the high-input breeds and consequently are more favorably applied in that context. Nevertheless, their application in local breeds is not precluded and can yield significant benefits, e specially when multiple technologies are applied in close collaboration with farmers and breeders. Breeding strategies that require cooperation and centralized decision-making, such as optimal contribution selection, may in fact be more easily implemented in small breeds. -
Book (stand-alone)Workshop on the implications of the Asian economic crisis for the livestock industry
Workshop proceedings; Bangkok 6-9 July 1999

No results found. The scrutiny of the Asian economic crisis has almost become an industry in its own right, with a multitude of publications and statements from all sorts of agencies and people. The analysis has been global, and many, at least in the early stages of the crisis, have predicted that the effects would be global and disastrous. It is not the function of this paper to discuss the possible reasons for the crisis, but to raise questions about what might be learned from the events of the last two years a nd the period leading up to the crisis – specifically in terms of the livestock industry. -
ProjectStrengthening the Livestock Sector in East and Southeast Asian Countries - TCP/RAS/3507 2019

No results found. The global trend of intensification of livestock production systemsto respond to the growing demand for livestock products is at its strongestin Asia. This process is characterized by multiple challenges, includingincreasing pressure on feed resources, the need to improve productivitywhile ensuring maintenance of biodiversity, consideration of naturalresource management, and improving preparedness for increased risksof zoonotic and other diseases. This has raised significant public policychallenges involving the marginalization of smallholder rural producers, minimization of environmental externalities, exploitation of livestock inreducing vulnerability, and enhanced preparedness for the increased risksof zoonotic and other diseases. Dealing with these challenges requiresconcerted and coordinated policy response, but the capacity to analyselivestock related trade-offs between social, environmental and economicobjectives and to design smart policies to balance conflicting interestsof different socio-economic groups is extremely limited in the region. This project aimed to enhance livestock sector policy formulation andimplementation capabilities in the region, and to better enable the sectorto make an effective contribution towards enhancing livelihoods, improving nutrition and promoting equitable economic growth.
