Urban forestry: cities, trees and people 1987
    Also available in:

Given the monumental challenges facing today's world - widespread poverty, urban blight, illiteracy, tropical deforestation and the threat of nuclear war, to name only a few - it may seem quite irrelevant to devote an issue of Unasylva to the rather tame-sounding subject of urban forestry. To millions of homeless or starving or unemployed people in the urban centres of the developing world, how important can urban forestry really be? In truth, urban forestry, as sometimes practiced, does tend to benefit the well-to-do at the expense of the underprivileged. But this does not necessarily have to be the case. In fact, urban forestry - like rural-oriented community forestry - offers an opportunity to bring the benefits of trees directly to the people. While these benefits may not be so familiar as - or may be quite different from - those in a rural setting, they nonetheless exist.

A scientific literature review was conducted with a focus on food safety to critically assess the current research on the impact of selected food additives on, and their interactions with the gut microbiome, as well as the resulting implications for host health. The review's main goals were to:> Gather and assess the quantity, quality, and reliability of scientific information,> Identify research limitations, knowledge gaps, and related needs,> Explore the applicability of microbiome data in food safety chemical risk assessments. This review concludes on recommendations to guide and improve microbiome science in risk assessment. Through this work, the Agrifood Systems and Food Safety Division contributes to the FAO’s role of improving food safety by encouraging high-quality research to produce robust data, promoting effective scientific communication, and investigating how knowledge regarding gut microbiome-food additive interactions could potentially support the modernization of food safety chemical risk assessments.

New food sources and production systems (NFPS) is a rapidly evolving and innovative sector that covers a range of foods from plant-based food products to products arising from technological innovations such as cell-based food production and precision fermentation. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) aims to help prepare its Members for the arrival of NFPS products or new foods on the market by providing sufficient information to suitably protect the health of consumers and implement fair practices in trade. Using foresight approaches, FAO has been monitoring this emerging sector and evaluating the opportunities and challenges it brings for agrifood systems, especially in the context of food safety.Based on this work, three focus areas were selected for a Food Safety Foresight Technical Meeting held at FAO headquarters in Rome from 13 to 17 November 2023. These areas – plant-based food products (that mimic animal-derived foods), precision fermentation and 3D food printing (3DFP) – were chosen based on their growing popularity in the NFPS space, and their relevance to food safety.
