    The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture in Lebanon, conducted a household survey between 31 October and 30 November 2023 using computer-assisted telephone interviews. These interviews were part of the FAO Data in Emergencies Monitoring (DIEM-Monitoring) System which monitors the impact of shocks on agricultural livelihoods and food security. The survey targeted the agricultural population using the sampling frame of agricultural holdings from the 2010 Lebanon Agricultural Census. Additional survey questions were added to assess the impact of the escalating hostilities in southern Lebanon on farmers’ agricultural livelihoods and food security.FAO established Data in Emergencies Impact (DIEM-Impact) to provide a granular and rapid understanding of the impact of large-scale hazards on agriculture and agricultural livelihoods using a variety of assessment methodologies, including primary and secondary information, remote sensing technologies, and FAO’s damage and loss methodology. DIEM-Impact presents a regularly updated and accessible state of food insecurity in fragile environments and helps underpin FAO's programming based on evidence.

    In collaboration with the FAO Representation in the Sudan, the FAO Subregional Office for Eastern Africa, the FAO Regional Office for Near East and North Africa, and the FAO Inclusive Rural Transformation and Gender Equality Division, this DIEM – Data in Emergencies situation overview presents the potential impacts of the ongoing conflict on agriculture and food security in the Sudan. FAO created the DIEM-Impact system to provide a rapid, granular analysis of the consequences of large-scale hazards on agricultural value chains and livelihoods. This analysis is based on a variety of assessment methodologies, including primary and secondary information collection, remote sensing technologies, and FAO's damage and loss methodology. DIEM-Impact can be activated in the context of sudden-onset and slow-onset hazards, natural or human-induced, including floods, cyclones and tropical storms, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, drought, invasive pests such as fall armyworm, pandemics and economic crises.

    The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) established Data in Emergencies Hazard Impact Assessment (DIEM-Impact) to provide a granular and rapid understanding of the impact of large-scale hazards on agriculture and agricultural livelihoods, using a variety of assessment methodologies, including primary and secondary information, remote sensing technologies and FAO’s damage and loss methodology. The Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai undersea volcano in the Kingdom of Tonga erupted on 15 January 2022. The eruption resulted in two events with potential impact on agriculture livelihoods and all agriculture sub-sectors: (i) a volcanic ash cloud; and (ii) a tsunami. The Government of Tonga declared a state of emergency on 16 January 2022. This is FAO's Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai Volcano Eruption DIEM-Impact Update No. 2. It presents initial post-disaster observations and recommendations that humanitarian actors can use to assess the situation and plan emergency data-driven livelihood support.
