It is only in recent years that the role of forestry in food security has been receiving attention as a result of the increasing realization of the dependence of rural people on trees and forests to meet important needs like food or income. As part of the Community Forestry Programme of FAO's Forestry Department a number of studies were commissioned in order to uncover existing information and to provide the basis for an objective understanding of the linkages between forestry and the food secur ity of rural people, particularly the poor and other vulnerable groups such as women. This report has been prepared as a component of the overall study by the Oxford Forestry Institute to review socio-economic aspects of the role of forestry in food production and food security, with special reference to those related to quality of life.
