Synopsis (short abstract) This regional technical workshop explores how cities in Eastern Europe and Central Asia are advancing sustainable development through local implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. By focusing on the development of Voluntary Local Reviews, the event fosters peer learning, regional collaboration, and practical knowledge exchange.Participants will share experiences from cities such as Mafra, Dushanbe, and Niš, showing how local reviews can support inclusive planning, stronger governance, and improved monitoring. A dedicated session is planned for presenting the role of cities in transforming agrifood systems, particularly in reducing food loss and waste.

This study tour, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization with UN-Habitat and UNDP, supports the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals through peer learning and city-to-city cooperation. Hosted by the Municipality of Mafra, Portugal, it brings together local authorities from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia working on Voluntary Local Reviews.Over three days, participants explore Mafra’s practical experiences in SDG implementation, including food waste reduction, biodiversity planning, wastewater reuse, and inclusive governance. Site visits highlight local initiatives such as the bioresidue separation program, food redistribution through Refood Mafra, and sustainable budgeting aligned with SDGs.The tour promotes knowledge exchange, capacity building, and collaboration across municipalities, contributing to global goals related to hunger, sustainable cities, responsible consumption, water, and partnerships.

2030 is seven years away and we are far from achieving the SDGs. Multiple crises are affecting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Local governments play a key role in piloting transformative actions that can accelerate SDG achievement. The aim of the side event is to share knowledge and tools to support local governments in SDG achievement, and to showcase key transformative actions implemented by local governments in ECA in support of agri-food systems transformation, as a key SDG accelerator.

A regional workshop on “The application of AquaGRIS: the FAO global information system, to build national registries of aquatic genetic resources” is planned to take place from 6-7 June 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand. The workshop, co-organized by FAO and SEAFDEC, aims to: 1) enhance the awareness on the importance of having a good information baseline on the aquaculture species and related farmed types and wild stocks in order for a country/region to make information-based decisions on AqGR management and the sustainable development of the aquaculture sector; 2) enhance participants’ understanding of AquaGRIS and their capacity to create national registries through it; and 3) develop a strategy and plan for the creation and long-term maintenance of AqGR registries in the region and start, after the workshop, the process of creating national registries in a group of countries that will be selected during the workshop.
