Synopsis (short abstract) The 2002 FAO Survey of World Pulp and Paper Capacities presents statistics on pulp and paper capacity and production by country and by grade. The document is based on information submitted by correspondents worldwide, most of them pulp and paper associations or, in their absence, paper companies. The survey presents only the results for countries that submitted answers to the questionnaires and no attempts have been made to estimate figures in the absence of returned information. The figures rel ated to capacity utilization should be consulted with caution. In some cases, the reader will notice that production is superior to capacity - where differences are small, these can be attributed to rounding off errors or to machines operating slightly above design capacities, where differences are more important and cannot be explained, FAO contacted the countries but was not successful in receiving answers. In some instances respondents provided only production figures without any indication of capacity, resulting in erroneous capacity utilization figures on an aggregated basis.
