Synopsis (short abstract) Uno de los retos más importantes a los que los alcaldes se enfrentan como gobernantes es garantizar que todos los habitantes de las ciudades reciban una alimentación adecuada. Las ciudades colombianas están en continuo crecimiento, y el conflicto armado desplaza a miles de personas más hacia ellas. La crisis económica ha afectado a los ciudadanos más pobres de Colombia con particular severidad. Según cálculos de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura y la Alimentaci ón, FAO, la décima parte de la población colombiana está desnutrida. Los recursos municipales son limitados. Algunos de ellos deben usarse para atender a la población en condiciones de inseguridad alimentaria a través de programas tales como los comedores comunitarios. Pero hay una parte importante de los habitantes de las ciudades que, a pesar de su pobreza, no recibe ayudas directas, sino que debe procurarse sus propios alimentos a través de tiendas, plazas y supermercados. Esta po blación, que en muchos casos trabaja en el sector informal de la economía y tiene ingresos inestables, es muy vulnerable. Por tanto, es prioritario que el comercio de alimentos funcione de la mejor forma posible para garantizar que esta población tenga acceso a ellos. Como autoridades locales, los alcaldes están dotados de instrumentos muy importantes para lograr que el sistema de distribución de alimentos atienda las necesidades de los ciudadanos que viven en condiciones de pobreza. Este documento sugiere algunas posibles líneas de acción en ese sentido.

    The 2023 edition of the Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean presents an update of the data and trends in food security and nutrition in recent years. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis and the conflict in Ukraine, as well as the economic slowdown, rising food inflation and income inequality have had an impact on regional figures. The most recent data shows that, between 2021 and 2022, progress was made in reducing hunger and food insecurity in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, the progress achieved is far from the targets established to meet SDG 2 of ending hunger. In addition, one in five people in the region cannot access a healthy diet and malnutrition in all its forms, including child stunting, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity continue to be a major challenge.
