Synopsis (short abstract) Knowledge sharing through South-South and Triangular Cooperation is a very powerful tool as it facilitates the exchange of lessons learnt and best practices among countries of the global south to help them end poverty and hunger. Learning from solutions that have worked elsewhere and adapting these experiences to local contexts, has been proven to be cost-effective, instead of “reinventing the wheel”. FAO views South-South and Triangular Cooperation as a broad framework for collaboration among developing countries that is rooted in the concept of solidarity that breaks the traditional dichotomy between donors and recipients. With this in mind, FAO is promoting the Knowledge Exchange Platforms on rural poverty reduction (KEPs), a tool to facilitate direct knowledge exchange among countries facing similar challenges, and foster mutual cooperation to meet SDG 1 and SDG 2 by 2030. Since the past biennium (2016-2017), FAO has created Knowledge Exchange Platforms (KEPs) in China, Ghana, Kenya and Senegal, whose policies and strategies have seen some progress in lifting the population out of poverty and hunger. Neighboring countries have also benefitted by learning from these experiences. The KEPs seek to improve countries’ capacities to design and implement solutions to reduce rural poverty and hunger, building on existing know-how available in other countries on sustainable and inclusive agricultural and rural transformations. The side-event aims to share successful experience on hunger and poverty eradication from the KEPs countries, including how multi-sectoral approaches, integrated policies and South-South and Triangular Cooperation can accelerate progress towards the achievement of these SDGs. It will include a photo exhibition outside the Sheikh Zayed Centre, with high-level participants from different Ministries, who will explain their champion programmes, strategies and/or initiatives being promoted with other countries through the KEPs. The event also seeks to engage member countries in a discussion on the strategies and policies needed as well as the challenges faced in achieving SDG 1 and SDG 2. Participants will also reflect on the role of South-South and Triangular Cooperation as a tool to assess, adapt and apply successful practices for poverty reduction at global scale.

    This document is part of a set titled "Ten debates on right to food and social protection – Learning from India's experience" that presents the major debates emerged during the development and adoption of the India’s National Food Security Act (2013).     Linkages between the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries and the Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food 2020

    Both the CFS Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security (Right to Food Guidelines) and the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines) hold the realization of the right to adequate food as their main objective. The Right to Food Guidelines emphasizes the role of small-scale producers in several sections and the SSF Guidelines as their first objective call “to enhance the contribution to fisheries to food security and nutrition and support the realization to the right to adequate food”. This brief is part of a series drawing attention to the mutually reinforcing nature of four global normative instruments developed through the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) SSF Guidelines. The four CFS instruments with direct links to the SSF Guidelines are the CFS Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security (Right to Food Guidelines), the CFS Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT), the CFS Principles for Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems (CFS-RAI Principles) and the CFS Framework for Action for Food Security and Nutrition in Protracted Crisis (CFS-FFA). Their synergistic implementation can make a difference in enabling small-scale fisheries to contribute to sustainable food systems by providing highly nutritious food for local communities, and it can make a difference for consumers in national, regional, and international markets. The briefs aim at highlighting key commonalities among these CFS instruments and the SSF Guidelines, and provide some illustrative examples to inspire action by all, including by governments, small-scale fisheries organizations or other civil society organizations, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and research and development partners.
