The inland fisheries sector in Sudan represent an important source of livelihoods and well-being for individuals and communities, as well as a potential for food security enhancement for the country. Despite this, the populations that depend on this sector continue to suffer from poverty, lack of employment, food insecurity, illiteracy, health constraints, gender inequality, and poor policy protection, which result in overall weak human dignity. The overall objective of the study was to get a be tter understanding of the dynamics of the fisheries and aquaculture sector, the livelihood situation of the small scale inland fishers communities living along the Nile, White Nile and Blue Nile, to gain a general idea of the challenges and constraints that these people goes through and to generate strong, practical recommendations based on the real context of the inland fishing communities, to better design, plan, implement, monitor and evaluate future fisheries and aquaculture projects in Suda n.

Developing a sustainable small-scale aquaculture in Mauritian lagoons 2014
    Also available in:

Observations have shown that there is a decrease in catch from the lagoons in Mauritius and this has probably led to the development of an aquaculture industry for the production of fish by alternate means from fishing. In fact, aquaculture is a viable alternative to fishing and can increase fish production, create jobs and indirectly create additional income for coastal communities. However, many constraints have impeded the success of some aquaculture development projects, mainly because of th e lack of monitoring at the technical level, incorrect selection of beneficiaries and insufficient attention to the technical and financial planning of this activity. The drafting of this Smart FICHE is a follow up to the project "Support for sustainable aquaculture development through the promotion of small-scale cage culture in the lagoon of Mauritius." This project was developed through a close collaboration between the Fishermen Investment Trust (FIT) and SmartFish Programme. The aim was to promote knowledge of aquaculture and its development, both for the fishers and the investors interested in diversifying their activities.

    Policy brief
Lessons learned and public policy recommendations on adaptation to climate change in artisanal fisheries and small-scale aquaculture in Chile. Policy brief. 2021
    Also available in:

This document is part of the project “Strengthening the adaptive capacity to climate change in the fisheries and aquaculture sector of Chile”, executed by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Ministry of the Environment, and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, with funding from the Global Environment Facility. The work was implemented in four pilot coves: Caleta Riquelme (Tarapacá); Caleta Tongoy (Coquimbo); Caleta Coliumo (Biobío); and Caleta El Manzano-Hualaihué (Los Lagos). This document presents the primary results and innovative aspects of the project, in keeping with its three main components: strengthening of public and private institutional capacities; improvement of the adaptive capacity of artisanal fisheries and small-scale aquaculture; and strengthening knowledge and awareness about climate change in fishing and aquaculture communities. It also details the lessons learned during the project, with the goal of providing the authorities and communities involved in the fisheries and aquaculture sector with the capacity and tools required to adapt to future climate scenarios. Recommendations are made for scaling-up adaptation actions in the pilot coves and making this initiative sustainable beyond the end of the project. Finally, public policy recommendations are presented according to five main subjects: plans and programmes in artisanal fishing and small-scale aquaculture; training at the national and local level; climatic and oceanographic information; productive diversification; and gender mainstreaming. This document is aimed at the beneficiary partners and the sectoral institutions and its objective is to serve as a guide and/or model for other coastal communities in Chile.
