ProjectFactsheetExpanding Global Nutrition Data Access: the FAOSTAT Food and Diet Domain - FMM/GLO/172/MUL 2024
Also available in:
No results found.A major barrier to achieving healthy diets for all is the lack of comprehensive dietary data to guide evidence-based policies. Understanding consumption patterns is essential for nutrition policies, agriculture, health interventions and education. In many low- and middle-income countries, large-scale food consumption surveys are limited, leaving decision-makers to rely on national food availability data, like the Supply Utilization Accounts (SUA), or household data from Household Consumption and Expenditure Surveys (HCES). While useful, these sources have limitations. SUA, for instance, includes only energy, protein and fat but lacks essential micronutrient data. Under the FAO Strategic Framework 2022–2031, a multi division team developed and launched the Food and Diet Domain on the FAO Corporate Food and Agriculture Database (FAOSTAT), providing publicly accessible, harmonized dietary data to support global healthy diet policies. This resource fills gaps in dietary data and enhances the ability of policymakers and stakeholders to make informed decisions. -

April 2025 update
2025Also available in:
No results found.Censuses of agriculture are large-scale statistical operations conducted at least once every ten years for collecting, processing and disseminating data on the structure of agriculture of a country. They collect data on agricultural holdings (often called farms) at the lowest geographical level, and are conducted under FAO’s decennial World Programme for the Census of Agriculture (WCA).The FAOSTAT domain Structural data from agricultural censuses was launched in 2022 to disseminate holding-level data collected in national censuses of agriculture and makes available data going back to the WCA 1930 round. The 2025 update of the FAOSTAT domain features an update for 15 countries for the WCA 2020 round (bringing the total number of countries with data for WCA 2020 to 66) and new data from earlier rounds for 135 countries and territories. -

February 2023 update
2023Also available in:
No results found. The FAOSTAT domain Structural data from agricultural censuses was launched in 2022 to disseminate data collected in national censuses of agriculture at the agricultural holding level. The censuses of agriculture are conducted under FAO’s World Programme for the Census of Agriculture (WCA), which is a decennial programme. Following this launch, and for the first time in a census round, FAO’s Statistics Division began to review data from censuses completed before the end of the current WCA 2020 round. This effort allowed the first update of the domain with WCA 2020 data for 21 countries, analysed in this brief.

Book (series)Working paperEstimating the food value chain decomposition by industries and primary factors 2024
Also available in:
No results found. This statistics working paper presents an estimation methodology for decomposing food expenditure across the industries and the primary factors of the food value chain (FVC). The approach outlined is based on the Global Food Dollar methodology developed by the Economic Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA-ERS) and Cornell University. FAO has enriched the analytical scope of the methodology by adding the industry and primary factors decomposition. Country coverage has also been increased by adapting the methodology to different data types and sources. -
