Although locusts are a type of grasshopper, they differ physiologically and in their behaviour. When environmental conditions allow, locusts multiply rapidly so that billions of them can aggregate and migrate vast distances devouring every growing green thing in their path. Plagues of locusts have occured for a long time and are even referenced in the Old Testament of the Bible. The magnitude of damage and crop loss that they can cause is enormous and beyond imagination. They have been the cause of starvation across continents in the past. The desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskål) is the most widespread and destructive of all locust species. When they invade they can cover about 30 million square kilometres and can include all or parts of 64 countries in the northwest and east of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and central Asia, including Afghanistan, India, the Islamic Republic of Iran and Pakistan, among others.

The 2025 SWAC workshop brought together Desert Locust Information Officers (DLIOs) from Iran and Pakistan to enhance early warning capabilities through hands-on training. Participants learned to use new tools like eLocust3K and RAMSESv4.1 for data collection, analysis, and forecasting. Sessions covered satellite imagery interpretation, locust biology, and field navigation using Locus Map. Emphasis was placed on improving technical proficiency, data visualization, and forecasting accuracy. The workshop reinforced collaboration, addressed software challenges, and promoted future capacity-building initiatives, including intensive training and stronger integration between technical and policy levels to bolster desert locust management systems.

The Desert Locust, Schistocerca gregaria, is the world’s most dangerous migratory pest with a voracious appetite unmatched in the insect world. Established in 1955 by FAO, when the world was in the midst of a 12-year-long Desert Locust plague, the Desert Locust Control Committee (DLCC) is the primary forum that brings together locust-affected countries, donors and other agencies to discuss Desert Locust management under the FAO umbrella. DLCC is also the primary advisory body to the Director-Gen eral of FAO on all Desert Locust issues.
