No results found.African Swine Fever ( is a highly contagious and fatal hemorrhagic viral disease that affects susceptible Suidae family, including pigs and wild boars In 2019 an expert team from the Emergency Management Centre for Animal Health (EMC AH) FAO conducted a Rapid Preparedness Assessment for ASF in Papua New Guinea, and concluded that the country was on high alert for an imminent incursion Recommendations were given to the National Agriculture Quarantine and Inspection Authority ( the country’s mandated Biosecurity and Veterinary service, on active reporting and surveillance, early detection, control and containment of ASF in the event of an incursion The Mission team, in collaboration with the NAQIA, the Department of Agriculture and Livestock (DAL and other relevant agencies and stakeholders, identified high risk entry pathways for ASF, namely the Indonesia and Papua New Guinea land borders, airports and seaports, through mining, logging and construction sites with Chinese or Asian contractors and/or workers The early detection of ASF was pertinent in the efficient and timely control and containment of the disease Given the high socio economic value of pigs in the country, particularly in the Highlands Region, it was imperative that an incursion be prevented and that ASF be kept out of this region Against this background, the project was designed to address gaps identified in the existing animal surveillance system in the NAQIA, and to strengthen the technical capacity of the NAQIA, the DAL and relevant agencies’ officers in active surveillance and reporting, diagnostics, and risk communication, to enable rapid detection and early containment of ASF incursion in the country. -

No results found.The Progressive Management Pathway for Terrestrial Animal Biosecurity (PMP-TAB) is a collaborative, stepwise approach to assessing and managing biological risks, to strengthen biosecurity in terrestrial animal production and associated value chains. Strengthening biosecurity will minimise health threats, including disease and antimicrobial resistance, improve production and enhance livelihoods through socioeconomic benefits. In Tanzania, the focus is on pig value chain actors, initially producers, to adopt minimum biosecurity practices at the farm level. This brief presents a snapshot of biosecurity in the Tanzania pig sector and a quick assessment of the capacity of public and private animal health services suppliers to interact and cooperate with livestock farmers and facilitate their adoption of good biosecurity practices and compliance with animal health legislation to ensure prevention and timely detection of animal disease and improve health outcomes. Existing laws, regulations and guidelines on biosecurity can make a difference only to the extent they reach and are applied by livestock farmers. -

It has been developed, tested and validated in a participatory manner with farmers, extension officers and subject matter experts. While part 1 of this document includes the checklist itself, part 2 describes how the checklist has been developed, which might be interest for professionals that are interested to replicate this approach in other countries of livestock systems. Post-event analysis of such events has indicated the importance of more effective use of risk communication principles and practices. Countries are encouraged to develop and assess their existing risk communication plans and practices applied to food safety and to learn from their own or other countries’ experiences. As the use of the Internet and social media technologies increases both in developed and developing countries, the public’s demand for greater transparency and more salient food safety risk information can be expected, confirming the importance of effective risk communication strategies in food safety and the broader public health sector. The purpose of this Handbook is to support countries, national food safety authorities and food chain stakeholders in establishing or enhancing risk communication practice and capacity in the food safety sector. This Handbook focuses on practical principles and best practices of risk communication to support risk management of adverse food safety (including quality) events associated with biological, chemical or physical hazards. The focus of this Handbook is on the use of risk communication in the process of risk analysis to manage both emergency food safety risks (e.g. foodborne illness outbreaks) and non-emergency or more enduring food safety issues (e.g. food safety and health promotion campaigns). The Handbook begins with a broad overview of the key goals and concepts of risk communication.

Transforming food systems for food security, improved nutrition and affordable healthy diets for all
2021In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation.To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world.In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.
