    The International Islamic Charity Organization contributed USD 502 387 to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for the implementation of project OSRO/SYR/002/IIC. The objective of the project was to increase the productive assets of 2 250 livestock-keeping and farming households in northwest Syria and improve their livestock breeding and farming skills to ultimately strengthen their resilience.

    This report presents the design and results of a baseline survey with respect to a project of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) focusing on empowering women in small-scale fisheries. The project supports the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (the SSF Guidelines), giving particular attention to the post-harvest sector in seven countries in sub-Saharan Africa: Ghana, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Madagascar, Namibia, and two countries in Asia: Indonesia and the Philippines. The results of the first five countries were published separately, as the project collected data in these countries in 2020—2021, with the additional four countries presented in this report added to the project in mid-2021.

    FAO's Aquastat programme compiles existing quantitative and qualitative information on water resources, water use and irrigation by country. This report focuses on the work done through the Aquastat surveys to collect and analyse available information on water resources for all countries in the world. It introduces the concepts and methodology applied to compute country-level water resources data, and presents and analyses the key findings at both global and regional levels. A summary table prov ides the elements of the water balance for each of the 170 countries and territories surveyed.

    This year’s report should dispel any lingering doubts that the world is moving backwards in its efforts to end hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms. We are now only eight years away from 2030, but the distance to reach many of the SDG 2 targets is growing wider each year. There are indeed efforts to make progress towards SDG 2, yet they are proving insufficient in the face of a more challenging and uncertain context. The intensification of the major drivers behind recent food insecurity and malnutrition trends (i.e. conflict, climate extremes and economic shocks) combined with the high cost of nutritious foods and growing inequalities will continue to challenge food security and nutrition. This will be the case until agrifood systems are transformed, become more resilient and are delivering lower cost nutritious foods and affordable healthy diets for all, sustainably and inclusively.
