Synopsis (short abstract) This factsheet provides an analysis of factors relevant to sustainable crop production and consumption. It provides key facts on the status and time trends for the Arab States and subregional groups (Maghreb, Mashreq, Least Developed Countries and Gulf Cooperation Countries) from 2000–2021. It provides an overview of the crop groups in terms of production, yield and value as well as a more detailed view of the statistics for selected crop types. The following data are included: PRODUCTION: crop production quantity 2021 by crop groups (cereals, fruit, vegetables, roots and tubers, oil crops, sugar crops, other); and top five crops produced in quantity 2021. YIELD: crop yield 2021 (cereals, fruit, vegetables, roots and tubers, oil crops, sugar crops, pulses); and top five crops in yield 2021. VALUE: value of production 2020 (for groups agriculture, cereals, crops, food, non–food); and top five crops in value of production 2021. Further information on crop yield by crop group, crop value and crops ever reported at country level are included in annexes.

    Erratic weather conditions across most of the Syrian regions, especially in the main cereal producing areas of the country in 2021 raised the need for an assessment based on well-established and recognized criteria to produce crop estimates comparable with previous assessments. In response to the request by the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic to conduct an analysis of the agricultural production in the 2020/21 crop season, in light of critical weather conditions, difficult economic environment exacerbated by other challenges, the FAO carried out an independent Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission (CFSAM) to estimate the 2021 cereal production, to assess the overall situation of the agricultural sector and to gauge prospects for the upcoming 2021/22 season. Given the travel restrictions, the mission relied on the network of resilience officers employed by the FAO Country Office that have detailed knowledge of local agricultural conditions and agro-ecological zones based across the different governorates. The field information collection took place between June and July 2021. Information was also provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform (MAAR) and several other relevant ministries and state bodies as well as by provincial departments of agriculture.

    Agricultural production statistics 2000–2021 2022

    FAO's Statistics Division provides a solid database that harmonizes agricultural production data collected for 199 countries and territories. The agricultural production domain in FAOSTAT covers data on crop and livestock commodities from production volumes to harvested areas and animal slaughtering rates. In addition, data for some selected processed crop and livestock products, synchronized and derived from the Food Balance Sheets domain, are also available up to the year 2020. This analytical brief summarises and highlights the relevant patterns up to 2021 revealed by the latest data update published on FAOSTAT.
