Several food-related issues affect the island countries of the Pacific, including a lack of investment in agriculture, imports that exceed local production, and increasing rates of obesity, undernutrition and non-communicable diseases (NDCs). A lack of capacity to document the impact of the relationship between nutrition and food systems prevents the rectification of these issues, with national governments largely unable to collect, administer, analyse and disseminate data on food availability and access. This project was originally designed to enhance data management among the Governments of Tonga and Samoa through an analysis of their national administrative and reporting systems for agricultural statistics, and through the subsequent formulation of recommendations and plans for the improvement of these systems. In addition, the project design also included the organization of the Pacific Island High-Level Nutrition and Food Systems Forum at the biennial FAO Asia-Pacific Regional Conference (APRC) in 2018, where the above-mentioned analyses would be discussed.
