Les pluies ont été insuffisantes pendant plusieurs années consécutives, ce qui a gravement compromis la production agricole et l’élevage. Selon les estimations, la récolte serait également inférieure à la moyenne au Soudan du fait du conflit et de la sécheresse. En revanche, la situation des disponibilités vivrières s'est améliorée en Éthiopie grâce à la bonne récolte. Au Kenya, la mauva ise récolte de maïs de la deuxième campagne accentuera les pénuries alimentaires en certains endroits, tandis qu’en Somalie, la bonne récolte “deyr” de la campagne secondaire améliorera les disponibilités vivrières dans les principales régions agricoles. En Afrique australe, les perspectives concernant les cultures de la campagne principale de 2005 sont contrastées du fait des précipitations tardives, irrégulières et généralement inférieures à la normale au cours de la première moitié de la camp agne. La situation des disponibilités vivrières des populations vulnérables, en particulier au Zimbabwe, au Lesotho et au Swaziland, est actuellement précaire en cette période de soudure. En Afrique de l’Ouest, la situation des disponibilités alimentaires reste critique en Mauritanie, tandis qu’en Côte d’Ivoire, l’insécurité continue de perturber les activités agricoles et commerciales.

No results found.Farmers’ Rights under the International Treaty is the fifth in a series of educational modules being developed under the coordination of the Secretariat of the International Treaty to strengthen capacities for the effective implementation of the International Treaty among its stakeholder groups. The work on these training materials was officially welcomed by the Governing Body of the International Treaty at its fourth session. The educational modules are aimed at all stakeholder groups of the International Treaty, including policy makers and their staff, civil servants, gene bank staff, plant breeders, farmers’ organizations and other civil society organizations. They are also designed as information and awareness raising materials for the use of media, academia, prospective donors and other interested institutions. -

No results found.Global climate studies show that not only temperatures are increasing and precipitation levels are becoming more varied, all projections indicate these trends will continue. It is therefore imperative that we understand changes in climate over agricultural areas and their impacts on agriculture production and food security. This study presents new analysis on the impact of changing climate on agriculture and food security, by examining the evidence on recent climate variability and extremes over agricultural areas and the impact of these on agriculture and food security. It shows that more countries are exposed to increasing climate variability and extremes and the frequency (the number of years exposed in a five-year period) and intensity (the number of types of climate extremes in a five-year period) of exposure over agricultural areas have increased. The findings of this study are compelling and bring urgency to the fact that climate variability and extremes are proliferating and intensifying and are contributing to a rise in global hunger. The world’s 2.5 billion small-scale farmers, herders, fishers, and forest-dependent people, who derive their food and income from renewable natural resources, are most at risk and affected. Actions to strengthen the resilience of livelihoods and food systems to climate variability and extremes urgently need to be scaled up and accelerated.
