Also available in:
No results found. This report delves into the potential of renewable energy interventions within the agrifood value chains of Zambia, with a specific focus on cereals, dairy, horticulture, tobacco, fisheries, and roots and tubers. It furthermore aims to evaluate the feasibility of various renewable energy interventions, such as solar irrigation, solar drying, solar milling, solar freezing, and e-mobility. The evaluation encompasses the technical, economic, and environmental aspects, with the objective to quantify their impacts on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, capital investment, and productivity. The findings of the report emphasize the positive impact of renewable energy interventions on the agrifood sector in Zambia, while illustrating the benefits, such as reduced GHG emissions, improved energy access and security, enhanced food quality and safety, as well as increased income and employment opportunities. In addition, the report underscores the significance of a comprehensive and integrated approach to facilitate the adoption and scaling up of renewable energy interventions. The detailed analysis of energy use and demand within the selected agrifood value chains, coupled with the proposed renewable energy interventions, stresses the potential to enhance sustainability and efficiency across these sectors. Moreover, the report's focus on a household energy survey conducted in the Meheba refugee camp puts an emphasis on a holistic understanding of the energy needs and preferences of the refugee settlement. -
ProjectStrengthening Capacities of the Government of Andhra Pradesh to Support Farmers to Adopt Sustainable Agri-Food Systems - TCP/IND/3807 2024

No results found.Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about half the population in India, which is also one of the main producers of milk, legumes, jute, rice, wheat and cotton. Due to soil erosion, burning of crop residues and a high use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, it is essential to transition to sustainability to increase agricultural productivity and enhance both food and ecological security in the country. Agriculture in Andhra Pradesh depends mostly on rainfall, so the monsoon and seasonal conditions play a crucial role and have been highly affected by climate change, leading the State of Andhra Pradesh, as many others in India, to experience soil degradation, yield reductions and seasonal yield gaps, which have increased the costs of production. Furthermore, other safety concerns such as the COVID 19 pandemic affected agricultural value chains, giving rise to the need to modernize the agricultural sector with technologies and marketing strategies that will lead to profitable and sustainable production systems. To address these challenges, the Government of Andhra Pradesh (state government) launched farmer facilitation centres (FFCs) as an efficient platform to disseminate knowledge and provide farmers with services and assistance to improve year-round productivity, profitability and sustainability. -
ProjectInclusive and Resilient Agri-Food System in Rural and Peri-Urban Territories of Kingston - TCP/JAM/3802 2024
Also available in:
No results found. The project was born of pre-existing issues facing the KMA, and Jamaica more broadly. Poverty and youth unemployment before the outbreak of COVID-19 were made worse by the onset of the pandemic. The pandemic disrupted the food supply chain, increased unemployment and cut incomes, worsening existent challenges with regard to food and nutrition security. Additionally, data from the Statistical Institute of Jamaica revealed that one-fifth of the Jamaican population lived below the poverty line and that youth unemployment exceeded 18 percent. This impact is felt disproportionately by the KMA, which is home to 60 percent of Jamaica’s population. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that small farmers in peri-urban and rural Kingston cannot commercialize their produce. The limitations affecting the MIIC and MOEY’s ability to remedy this have negatively affected derivative initiatives, such as the National School Feeding Programme (NSFP).
