Bayesian approaches to stock assessment provide a means for the analyst to combine information for the stock for which an assessment is needed, information based on expert opinion, and inferences for other species in a probabilistic framework. It is even possible to consider uncertainty about which model of the population dynamics is correct. This manual provides an overview of the application of Bayesian methods through a series of worked examples in EXCEL. The examples are based on biomass dyn amics and stock-recruitment models, and focus on the use of assessments that form the basis for evaluating the consequences of alternative management actions. Also available in HTM format: http://www.fao.org/3/Y1958E/Y1958E00.htm

This review summarizes the data and methodological gaps identified through the reports of the FAO working groups in the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF) area. It highlights the need to improve data quality and assessment approaches appropriate to the existing data in the CECAF region. Improving data and access to existing data is a priority for the development and application of more advanced stock assessment models to strengthen the scientific advice provided and to support the CECAF Scientific Sub-Committee and the Committee.
