Synopsis (short abstract) The 6th publication (Volume 3 Issue 1) of the Biosafety Newsletter contains information about key meetings and activities that took place from September 2020 through April 2021 in the National Biosafety Project (Implementation of the National Biosafety Framework in accordance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety). The cover page and the middle pages are dedicated to inform the audience about the several risk assessment guidelines developed through the project and the trainings on using the guidelines. In this publication, the international consultants share their experience with the National Biosafety Project. The back cover is dedicated to inform the audience about the launch of the Sri Lanka Biosafety clearing house (BCH) website by the Secretary to the Ministry of Environment, which is a key milestone of the project. The newsletter also mentions about online meetings and workshops held such as the 4th Project steering committee (PSC) meeting, various trainings including monitoring and inspection of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), accessing information through the BCH and maintaining the Sri Lanka BCH. Also included are other biosafety awareness activities and the development of the biosafety communication strategy for Sri Lanka. The Newsletter is an initiative by the National Biosafety Project (Implementation of the National Biosafety Framework in Accordance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety). This project is implemented by the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment and the Food and Agriculture Organization. This newsletter will be a platform for experts, the academia and students to share scientific findings and perceptions on Biosafety. This newsletter which will be in English, Sinhalese and Tamil will provide awareness on Biosafety which is important with regard to the production of Genetically Modified Organisms including Genetically Modified plants to increase crop productivity and value addition to products. In addition the benefits of Genetically Modified products in the Pharmaceutical industry and in human health are also included in the newsletter

The 7th publication (Volume 4 Issue 1) of the Biosafety Newsletter contains information about key meetings and activities that took place from May 2021 through to March 2022 in the National Biosafety Project (Implementation of the National Biosafety Framework in Accordance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety). This newsletter features the upgrading of Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) testing labs and the production of various material for awareness on biosafety. It is also dedicated for the national consultants in the project to share their experiences. Further, the main implementing partners of the project, the Ministry of Environment and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) share their messages on a successful partnership. The aim of the Biosafety Newsletter is to provide information on Biosafety and updates of the National Biosafety Project to a cross section of the population including university academics, students, persons involved in research and development in various scientific disciplines, farmers and the general public. With regard to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) the potential benefits and risks to consumers of Genetically Modified (GM) products were given consideration and GMOs approved globally is highlighted in this newsletter to provide a broader understanding on global acceptance of GMOs particularly in food and agriculture. In addition, information on the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety by national and international key roles in the project from the implementing partners, Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment and the Food and Agriculture Organization respectively, is also highlighted in this issue. This newsletter is a forum for everyone to share their views and perceptions on Biosafety and would also be a platform to integrate everyone relevant to the field of Biosafety in Sri Lanka.
